One of the first time I met Harry, it was in Paris a few years ago. As probably all the skate filming trips, the day starts with a meeting at a previously designated spot, where one or several guys are supposed to film a trick that is worth filming.

Harry showed up at the spot holding his unfinished breakfast in the hand, which consisted as a yogurt.
Between two spoons of yogourt (not sure if he got a spoon), Harry find the time to land a hammer, just a warming up for him, while everyone else were trying to wake-up properly. The rest of the day, Harry skated non stop, got hard slams, which didn’t affect him at all, had clips and photos, and nobody heard him complaining at anytime. Harry is the “beast”, in the best sens of the term.

Where are you originally from ?
I’m from South England originally, I grew up in Texas but I’m British. We lived there because my dad got a job there. Everyone ask me why I sound funny, and it’s just because I grew up in Texas.

How old were you when you came back to England ?
Thirteen, I got my first board in America, but I didn’t learn tricks until I came back to England, I didn’t know anyone.

Where do you live now and what do you like about your place ?
I live in Manchester. I like the people, I love London but Manchester is a much friendler city, and it’s also cheaper.

What happened to your front teeth ?
Ahah , it’s not the most exciting story. When I was younger I had friends at BMX in England, we used to swap skateboards and bikes all the time. There was that metal spine that was wet on one side, I didn’t know it was wet.
I had a fake one for a little while but it didn’t last, it fell out and it was too expansive to get fixed. At the time I was working at Mc Donalds so I couldn’t afford this. And it’s been years and years, and now, fuck it, I’m used to it and everybody is used to it.
Now I do travel quite a lot and it’s hard to be like « I’m gonna be there for the appointment ».
So it was BMX not even skating.

Do you know Rodney Mullen used to have a front teeth missing for a couple of years also ?
Oh really ? I need to get mine fixed anyway.

You got the « amateur » status, can you make a living from skateboarding ?
Yes, I’ve been making a living from skateboarding since I was 19, I’m 28 now so it’s been nearly 10 years. But yeah, I’m still amateur, not pro, but I do make a living like to pay rent and able to buy drink and stuff.

Yes, that’s the minimum : drink, travel, eat
Yeah yeah , drink, eat, travel, skate and rent.

How happy are you with in your situation, would you like more, get pro ?
I’m happy with where I am, but I’d like to go further to get my name on a board, that’d be great I’d be so stoked. But I’m happy where I am, trying to work towards for it like with Real and stuff like that but hopefully fingers crossed…

Some skaters now have an agent, could you have one ?
Actually I have one !

Really ? How does it works with you ?
His name is James Monk, he actually does this for a living, he does this for others skaters like Ross McGowan and a bunch of people from Europe. He does my accounts so the taxman doesn’t get me any trouble. He’s really good at it. He became my agent a few months ago. He represents me, tries to push me further without me having to say, which is good because I like to want to keep my relationship with the brands as best as possible.

So he trie to get you the maximum from the brands you can get ?
Yes, it’s exactly what he does, he has a set rate kind of thing it’s not too expensive, it’s worth paying to not be in trouble with the taxman, so yeah, as you said it’s worth paying to have somebody who represents you and get the maximum you can.

You’re not really into social medias, if I’m not wrong ?
I’m really bad ahah

Does your agent ask you to do more ?
Not really, he’s really cool about it. I definitely think I should do more. But I’m just that guy who doesn’t take any photos, I’m going home and afterward, suddenly I say « I should post something » but I don’t have any.

At the same time, you have a lot of coverage in videos and magazine, so it’s fine I guess ?
Yeah, my instagram and social media are personal account but it’s more like I promote the online videos and articles…

How long have you been on the road this year ?
Oh ! I’ve probably been on the road 5 months so far in total, I went to SF, Barcelona, Belgium, this one (Malmö), there is another one coming, and another one… This years it will probably be like 8 or 9 months of the year of travel.

Do you like it ?
Yes I love travelling, it’s so good, it’s fun, a bit stressfull…just cause i’m a useless skateboarder, it doesn’t budget well…that’s half the fun

You recently had a lot of footage in San Fransisco, do you like the city ?
I love the city, it’s great, it remind me Europe so much because it’s small and you don’t need a car, you can just throw down your board and have fun. Similar to Paris or London.
The hills, well… get a chance to go, It’s insane, I can’t explain how crazy it is, the speed is insane. It’s really do or die. The GX1000 crew are really good friends, they are the reason why I went there in the first place, they were the guys who took me under their wings, they were like « you can stay with us, we will really help you ». Best crew, all of them. I still see them as much as I can every times I go there. Now it’s different because riding for Deluxe, I got some responsibilities. But I try to see them as much as possible, like « today it’s Deluxe day, today it’s GX day »…

So you met Pablo Ramirez, how was he in person ?
Full of life, it’s crazy, when I first met him, I was like « that guy is so intense » you know ? The more you hang out with him the more you realize he was an exciting dude, honest and true. He was a really talented musician, and poet actually, he does a lot of creative things, really good at the drums…
He was one of the good reasons why I bombed hills. He took me up at Twin Peaks for the first time. A lot of people didn’t have time for me, the GX crew did and he did. That’s how also elevated from there but from just knowing and guys and having the help.

Tell me about 3 places you want to visit again ?
I’d like to go back to Paris, it’s an amazing city, so smooth, I like the spots, the architecture is really good for skating.
I’d like to go back to Morocco on a skate trip, I’ve been there for holiday but I’d like to go there on a skate trip. The colors, the spots, the people, the culture you pretty much get free reign if you want nobody would care. It’s really cool.
The third place, I never been but I want to go to NYC, I’m dying to go.

3 skateboarder who inspired you ?
Simon Jensen from San Fransisco, smoothest style,
Matt Finley from GX1000, it’s a really good choice of trick.
Jiri Bulin : he’s a bit of unknown indeed, but he’s a local in Manchester, he rides for Etnies and toy machine trough distribution. When I’m at home he inspires me all the time. When I go skate with him, that’s like “ok, we are gonna play now”.

3 all time video parts ?

Pretty much any rail in England – It’s a really battle to make it works
In Malmö, there is this spot I love but I didn’t land my trick
Most spots in LA because you have to drive 2 hours to get there

3 slams you won’t forget ?
Sacking a rail in Paris, I broke my uretre I will never forget that
I rolled my ankle really bad years ago on an handrail on double set. My back foot rolled so bad and I never got checked out, I’m sure I broke it.
And this one on my elbow, when I was drunk on a bike, it took two months to heal, it toff of my spider web tatoo.

Weird scenes you witnessed in the street ?
In Manchester, there was this muscly guy, really muscly with tight t-shirt, with his girlfriend next to him holding hands. They were walking toward this pigeon in front of them. The punched the pigeon, no hesitation. They didn’t stop and just kept walking. I couldn’t believe it. The pigeon was dead.
Tenderloin in SF, I’ve seen one guy underneath an umbrella in the rain, with huge hole in his arm like doing drugs and needles. It was an old man. He was picking a way with a needle try to find a vein and stuff that was fucking dark I walked back to there, where I stand like a different way cause I thought “he’s gonna be dead”.

Une des premières fois que j’ai vu Harry, c’était à Paris il y a deux ans. Comme tout bon trip de skate pour filmer une vidéo, la journée démarrait sur un spot, précédemment choisi, où un ou plusieurs gonz sont supposés filmer des tricks.
Harry a débarqué sur la spot, avec son reste de petit dej dans la main, un yogourt. Entre deux cuillerée, il a trouvé le temps de faire un hammer, juste pour rire.
Le reste de la journée, Harry a skaté non stop, a pris de méchantes boites, qui n’avaient pas l’air d’avoir beaucoup d’effet sur lui, a pu filmer et shooter plusieurs tricks, and personne ne l’a entendu se plaindre. Harry est une « bête », dans le meilleur sens du terme.
Tu es originaire d’où ?
A la base, je suis du sud de l’Angleterre, mais j’ai grandi au Texas et je suis anglais. J’ai déménagé au Texas car mon père a eu un travail là-bas. Tout le monde me dit que j’ai un accent rigolo et c’est juste parce que j’ai grandi au Texas.
Tu avais quel âge quand tu es revenu en Angleterre ?
14 ans, j’ai eu mon premier skate aux Etats-Unis, mais je ne faisais pas de trick avant de venir en Angleterre, je ne connaissais personne.
Où vis tu maintenant et qu’aime tu de cet endroit ?
Je vis à Manchester. J’aime les gens, j’adore Londres mais à Manchester les gens sont plus cool, et c’est également moins cher.
Qu’est-il arrivé à ta dent de devant ?
Ah ah, c’est pas la plus passionnante des histoires. Quand j’étais jeune, j’avais des mais qui faisaient du BMX, on avait l’habitude d’échanger BMX et skate tout le temps. Et il y avait ce spine en métal, avec un coté mouillé, je ne savais pas qu’il était mouillé. C’est arrivé comme ça.
J’ai eu une fausse dent pendant un moment mais elle n’a pas tenu et c’était trop cher à remplacer. Je travaillais à McDonalds à ce moment-là, je n’avais pas les moyens. Les années ont passé, et maintenant, merde, je suis habitué comme ça et tout le monde est habitué.
Maintenant, je voyage souvent, et c’est compliqué d’assurer les RDV chez le dentiste.
Donc, en effet, c’était avec un BMX, même pas en skate.
Tu savais que Rodney Mullen avait une dent manquante comme toi, pendant un petit moment ?
Ah vraiment ? De toute façon je devrais la faire réparer.
Tu as le statut d’amateur, peux-tu vivre du skate actuellement ?
Oui, j’en vis depuis que j’ai 19 ans, j’ai 28 ans aujourd’hui, ça fait déjà presque dix ans. Mais oui, je suis toujours amateur, pas pro, mais j’arrive à payer le loyer, acheter à boire et ces trucs-là.

T’es satisfait de ce que tu as, ou tu souhaites avoir plus, voir être pro ?
Je suis satisfait de là où je suis, j’aimerais aller plus loin, avoir mon nom sur une board, ce serait génial. Mais je suis content de ma situation, je travaille pour ça avec Real, donc croisons les doigts.
Certains skaters ont un agent, tu pourrais en avoir un ?
En fait j’en ai un.
Vraiment, et comment ça marche ?
Son nom est James Monk, c’est son métier, il est l’agent d’autres skater comme Ross McGowan et beaucoup d’autres en Europe. Il s’occupe de mes comptes pour éviter d’avoir des problèmes avec le FISC, il est très compétent pour ça. Il est devenu mon agent il y a quelques mois. Il me représente, essaye de me pousser, ce qui est bien car je veux garder les meilleures relations avec les sponsors.
Donc il essaie de t’obtenir le maximum que tu peux avoir ?
Oui, c’est exactement ce qu’il fait, il prend un pourcentage qui n’est pas trop grand, et ça vaut le coût de payer pour éviter les problème de FISC, et ça vaut le cout de payer pour avoir quelqu’un qui te représente et qui essaie de tirer un maximum.
Tu n’es pas très passionné pas les réseaux sociaux ?
Non, ahah, je suis nul.
Ton agent te demande d’en faire plus ?
Non, il est vraiment cool pour ça. Je pense clairement que je devrais en faire plus. Mais je suis quelqu’un qui ne prend pas de photos, quand je rentre chez moi parfois je me dis, allez je poste un truc, mais en fait je n’ai pas de photos.
En même temps, tu as beaucoup d’image dans les vidios ?
Oui, mon Instagram est un compte personnel mais je m’en sers principalement pour faire la promotion des vidéos ou articles dans lesquels je suis.
Combien de temps as-tu passé en voyage cette année ?
Oh ! Probablement 5 mois sur la route en total, je suis allé à SF, Barcelona, Belgique, celui-là (à Malmö), un autre qui arrive, puis un autre… Cette année, je serai 8 ou 9 mois en voyage.
Tu aimes ça ?
Oui, j’adore, c’est trop bien, un peu stressant car en tant que skateboardeur, je ne planifie pas bien le budget, mais c’est ça qui est drôle aussi.
Tu as eu beaucoup d’image à SF dernièrement, tu aimes cette ville ?
J’adore cette ville, c’est génial, ça me rappelle beaucoup Londres ou Paris, c’est petit, tu n’as pas besoin de voiture pour te déplacer. Tu jettes ta board à terre et tu t’amuses.
Les collines et le descentes, il faut y aller pour comprendre, c’est compliqué à expliquer comme c’est fou. La vitesse est folle, c’est vraiment « Do or Die ». Le GX1000 crew sont de très bons amis, ils sont la raison pour laquelle je suis allé à SF la première fois, ils m’ont pris sous leurs ailes, ils me disaient « tu peux rester avec nous, on t’aidera ». Meilleur crew, chacun d’entre eux. Je continue de les voir le plus possible à chaque fois que je vais là-bas. Maintenant, c’est différent car j’ai des responsabilités avec DLX, donc j’essaie de m’organiser « Aujourd’hui c’est DLX, aujourd’hui c’est GX… ».
Donc tu as passé du temps avec Pablo , comment était-il en personne ?
Un soleil, c’est fou, quand je l’ai rencontré pour la première fois, je me suis dit « ce type est vraiment intense » tu vois ? Plus tu le fréquente et plus tu réalises qu’il était intéressant, honnête et vrai. Il était un musicien talentueux, un poète aussi, il avait beaucoup d’activité créatives, très bon à la batterie…
Il est la raison pour laquelle j’ai pris les descentes pour la première fois. Beaucoup n’avaient pas de temps pour moi les premières fois là-bas et il m’a amenée à Twin Peaks.

Parles moi de 3 lieux que tu souhaites visiter à nouveau?
J’aimerais retourner à Paris, ville incroyable, j’aime les spots et l’architecture, c’est vraiment bien pour skater.
J’aimerais retourner au Maroc, j’y suis allé en vacances mais j’aimerais faire un skate trip là-bas. Les couleurs, les spots, les gens. Tu fais un peu ce que tu veux les gens ne font pas attention.
Et aussi, je rêve d’aller à NYC, je n’y suis jamais allé.

3 slams que tu n’oublies pas :
Sacking sur un rail à Paris, je me suis sectionné l’urètre, je n’oublierai jamais ça.
Une fois, je me suis tordu la cheville très fort et je n’ai pas fait faire d’examen, je suis sûr d’avoir cassé quelque chose.
Et une fois, je suis tombé sur le coude, quand j’étais bourré à vélo, ça a pris deux mois à se résorber. Une partie de mon tatouage toile d’araignée est parti.
3 scènes bizarres dont tu as été témoin dans la rue :
A Manchester, un type grand mec baraqué avec tshirt moulant qui passait, tenant la main de sa copine. Un pigeon arrive en face d’eux, à leur hauteur et soudainement, le type donne un énorme coup de poing au pigeon. Pas d’hésitation, sans s’arrêter et continuent leur chemin sans aucune réaction. Le pigeon était mort après ça.
Dans le quartier de Terderloin à SF, j’ai vu un type avec un énorme trou dans le bras, sous la pluie sous son parapluie, un drogué. Je passe qu’il allait mourir.
