To be honest, that interview should have been published months ago. Jameel was on a trip in France and we were supposed to meet in Paris. Due to our respective non matching schedule, we didn’t meet in Paris. Then, Jam was in Bordeaux with Leo and they found the time to record this interview just before catching a train back to Paris. Well he missed the train anyway… A few weeks later, Leo’s daughter was born and my son was born a few weeks after, so we were quite too busy at that time to edit the interview.
Anyway, I’ve been a long time Jam’s fan, one of the most stylish guy in Bay Area, so I’m very exited to have Jam on CafeCreme, speaking about his hometown, his connection with the local scene, getting on Magenta and more.

You grew up in Redwood city not far from San Francisco how was growing up in Redwood City How different was it from San Francisco ?
Redwood is a way smaller town than SF. It’s the suburbs so it’s quite boring you know, I think we we’re anxious to leave redwood city even though we’re very prideful of it. It’s definitely nothing like living in san Francisco, we’re much more free in San Francisco to do what we want.

Would you consider Redwood city a little bit ghetto ?
No I would say it’s a mix between low income and middle, it’s a working-class city so I think a lot of people there are uh what would you say i don’t want to say something stupid like hispanic heritage… A lot of people work hard, have two jobs and multiple kids

But you had a nice skateboarding crew growing up in Redwood City right ? you grew up with Jesse Narvaez or Tobin ?
We grew up there and they are a lot of us but there are three that that I love dearly, there’s actually so many I can’t say three, there is actually a very large crew. Skateworks, the skate shop back home, was a huge influence on us and then you know everyone was a little bit older so yeah they helped us out a lot.

How how did you meet Jesse Narvaez because we see you guys getting together for so long ?
We were pretty young, I think I met Jesse at my elementary school they had I guess a seventh stairs that everyone would skate at the elementary school and it was kind of a rite of passage you know, they had to ollie or kickflip it whatever you could and one day I showed up and Jesse was hanging out and he already had like a whole group of homies. From what I remember, tell me if this is wrong (to Jesse), Jesse was trying to kick flip it and I went through my little ollie and 180 and just naturally as a little kid you’re not thinking about ethics or anything, was like fuck I wanna kickflip it too and I remember kickflipin it and then turning around and looking at Jesse and being like « Yo man can I spend the night at your house ? » that was the beginning of our friendship man. I’m not sure if my memory is right though…

Jesse : it’s close but..

I see that’s why I wanted you here, just in case uh you know 22 years later or something…

Jesse : Wanna hear the story ? I was trying to kick flip and you weren’t trying to kick flip it yet actually yeah I was trying to keep moving and I snapped my board then Jam showed up and ollied and 180 it first try.

Jam : It sounds like i’m on point

Jesse : And then I don’t think you kickfliped, I think you like chilled and supported me and I was a crazy little kid already like so anxious, trying to keep up this thing I was so bummed because it was a brand new board and Jameel offered to me « I got an old board for you » and hooked me up and we became best friends.

Jam : I’m pretty sure I kickfliped it

Can you tell us about the Stroblack edits that are coming out on instagram ?
Stroblack is our way of maybe trying to participate in social media. For a long time we thought it was maybe narcissistic or weird or something and we realized now that it’s a valuable tool. Our friend Ryan Flores is just incredible at editing and he’s an incredible filmer, he filmed the Merlot video and the Grapevine video. Ryan is a New Yorker, he’s very interesting, very opinionated so yeah he takes the editing serious, we love it because he brings the New York vibe. We thought that Stroblack was a funny character you know and we figured if how obnoxious could we be if we just rename this Stroblack and start putting out little edits . Let’s be honest his camera, his VX, is a little broken, the VX are ancient by this point, everyone’s has something wrong with it so it’s just easier and I mean he’s so good at editing.

It’s cool to to see you guys through a phone after seeing you guys through a vx so many times, it’s actually fun because it looks very natural, we can tell you guys are having fun with it.

You just did a trip to Paris and Bordeaux can you tell us about it ?
It was great man, I packed on some weight, I mean the chocolatines and « pains au chocolat » depending on where you are, are amazing and then you throw in the almond frangipane and now you’re just a blob. I had an injury pretty much third day on the trip but it doesn’t mean that this place isn’t beautiful and I got to watch my friends shred and I think with our optimism applied it’s been a wonderful trip.

How many chocolatines do you think you ate in three weeks ?

Countless ! Thousands man, i’m sure, I feel like it dude !

Jesse : Come on, let’s be honest, if i had to take a guess : 40 to 50.

Jam : I feel like that’s a fair guesstimation, I think 40.

If you had to pick one memory of the trip one thing that would last forever right now ?
I’ve met some really incredible people on the trip. I got a memory with Leo when we shared a room and I was snoring too loud and he would not hesitate to let me know ahah. I met Ruben (Spelta), way taller than I ever thought, the camera doesn’t do him justice. I got to meet Charlie Myatt from Scotland, and yeah I got to kick it with Lolo Valls. I think it’s been a great trip.

What is the first thing you’re gonna do when you come home ?
I’m gonna pick up the dog and we’re coming right back ahah ! I’m excited to get back home to San Francisco, France is beautiful with the skate spots but they’re really slippery so i’m excited to maybe have some rougher terrain. You know i’m missing my Third and Army and my EMB.

How do you feel now that you got a Magenta? are you gonna learn some french?
oh « oui » I’ve been working on this already you know, « comment on dit » is the secret, that will unlock some doors man ahah. Magenta has been really interesting for us I think, we love Northern dearly but I think Magenta gives us an interesting opportunity at 30 years old to say « hey look let’s try this again » and it’s a good group of people, the morale is good. You can’t help but be motivated to set up a board. And now we’ve got dope clothing. We’re excited.

You do a lot of switch no complies which I love, are you a natural switch no complier ? Did it come natural for you to do this. I like when you do switch no comply 360 is going downhills and stuff ?
I’m gonna be honest with you, I cannot do regular no complies, I cannot do no comply 180, I cannot do no comply 360, or any variations, I would sack myself ahah. But, switch 180 is a good feeling trick and I think they kind of have the same scoop and so that one works pretty good.

Last question because you have a train to catch. What are your next plans and what do you want to accomplish in the future ?
Well I guess my plan is to catch the train! I want to try to participate more on social media and you know I realized what a great tool it is and I think we’ve been so stubborn and maybe naive to it, and I want to film more you know. With Covid lockdown, it might sound horrible, but it has actually been a blessing for many skateboarders, i’m excited to get out there and skate and learn new tricks cause there’s nothing stagnant about skateboarding right now. so i think i’m excited to come back to France. I’m excited to go home, I’m excited to get my leg working again, I’m excited to get Zach behind the VX, to do more Stroblack, i’m excited for chocolatine, I’m gonna go home and make sure I find a good bakery. There are just too many things to look forward to!

Version française

Tu as grandi à Redwood City, près de San Fransisco, coment est-ce différent de SF ?
Redwood est beaucoup plus petit que San Francisco, c’est la banlieue donc un peu ennuyant, on était pressé de quitter cette ville mais en même temps on était fier d’être de là-bas. C’est très différent de la vie à SF, on est beaucoup plus libre de faire ce qu’on veut à SF.

Tu considères Redwood comme un ghetto ?
Non, je dirais que c’est un mix de classe moyenne et classe populaire, c’est une ville ouvrière. Sans vouloir dire avec de stupides termes, je dirait qu’il y a un heritage hispanique. Beaucoup de gens travaillent dur, ont plusieurs jobs et une famille nombreuse.

Tu fréquentais un bon crew, originaire de Redwood avec Jesse et Tobin par exemple ?
Nous sommes nombreux à avoir grandi là-bas, et dont trois dont je suis très proche. Non, en fait je ne peux pas dire seulement trois, on était un bon groupe. Skateworks, le skateshop local, avait une grande influence et tout le monde était un peu plus âgé, ils nous ont beaucoup aidé.

Comment as tu rencontré Jesse Narvaez, on dirait que vous vous côtoyez depuis toujours ?
Nous étions très jeunes, je crois que j’ai rencontré Jesse à mon école primaire. Il y avait ce set marches que tout le monde skatait. C’était un peu le rite de passage tu vois, tu devais les passer en ollie, kickflip peu importe ce que tu pouvais et un jour je suis arrivé et Jesse était là et il avait déjà un groupe d’amis avec lui. D’après mes souvenirs, dis moi si je me trompe (à Jesse), Jesse essayait de passer les marches en flip et je suis arrivé et j’ai fait mon ollie et mon frontside 180. Et en tant que gamin, je ne pensais pas à l’étique où ce genre de truc, et donc je me suis dit que je voulais faire flip aussi, je l’ai rentré, je me suis retourné et j’ai dit à Jesse « Yo man je peux passer la nuit chez toi ? » , c’était le début d’une longue amitié. Enfin, je ne suis pas complètement sûr de mes souvenirs..

Jesse : C’est assez proche mais…

Jam : Tu vois, c’est pour ça que je voulais que tu soies là, c’était il y a 22 ans environ..

Jesse : Ok tu veux la vraie histoire, j’essayais Flip, pas toi, j’essayais encore et encore et j’ai cassé ma board, tu es arrivé et tu as fait ollie et 180 first try.

Jam : Du coup j’avais raison

Jesse : Mais par contre je ne pense pas que tu as fait Flip, je crois que tu chillais et tu me soutenais, j’étais un gamin déjà à bloc et dégouté d’avoir cassé ma board, qui était presque neuve en plus. Jam m’a dit « J’ai une vieille board pour toi » et nous sommes devenu les meilleurs amis.

Jam : Je suis presque sûr d’avoir rentré Flip

Peux tu nous parler des edits « Stroblack » que tu sors sur Instagram ?
Stroback est en quelque sorte un façon de m’impliquer dans les réseaux sociaux. Pendant longtemps on pensait que c’était narcissique, et plutôt chelou, puis on a réalisé que c’était un outil utile. Notre pote Ryan Flores est très bon pour le montage et un filmer incroyable, il a réalisé « The Merlot » et « Grapvine ». Ryan est new-yorkais, passionné et opiniâtre et il prends le montage sérieusement, on adore car il apporte une touche de New York à son travail. Pour être honnête, sa VX est un peu endommagée, elles sont anciennes maintenant, toutes ont un problème donc c’est plus simple avec le smartphone.

Tu viens de faire un trip à Paris et Bordeaux tu peux en parler ?
C’était génial, j’ai pris du poids, je parle des « Chocolatines » ou pains au chocolat selon les régions, c’est délicieux et tu ajoute de la frangipane à l’amande et tu deviens énorme. Je me suis blessé le troisième jour du trip mais le pays est magnifique et j’ai regardé mes potes skater, et avec l’ambiance du groupe c’était un magnifique voyage.

Combien as tu mangé de chocolatines en trois semaines ?
Des milliers ! Je peux pas compter, en tout cas c’est comme ça que je le ressens.

Jesse : Attends, soyons honnête, je dirais entre 40 et 50.

Jam : Oui ça doit être une bonne estimation, je pense 40.

Si tu dois choisir un souvenir de ce trip ?
J’ai rencontré pleins de gens incroyables pendant le voyage. J’ai le souvenir de partager la chambre avec Léo, je ronflais trop fort et il n’a pas hésité à me le faire comprendre ahah. J’ai rencontré Ruben Spelta, il est beaucoup plus grand je je ne le pensais, la camera ne lui rend pas justice. J’ai rencontré Charlie Myatt d’Ecosse, j’ai rencontré Lolo Valls (l’épouse de Léo), c’était un trip génial.

Quelle est la première chose que tu fera en rentrant à la maison ?
Je vais prendre le chien et revenir ici direct ahah Je suis super content de rentrer à SF, la France est magnifique avec des super spots mais ils glissent beaucoup et peut être que je suis content de retourner sur des spots plus rugueux. Third Army et EMB me manquent.

Que t’évoque de rider pour Magenta ? Tu dois apprendre le français ?
oh « Oui » j’y travaille déjà, « Comment on dit ? » est la botte secrete, ça ouvre pleins de portes ahah. Magenta est une très bonne chose pour nous, nous adorons Northern Co mais je pense que Magenta nous a donné une bonne opportunité de se relancer à 30 ans, et puis c’est un super groupe avec une bonne morale. Tu ne peux être que motivé. Et en plus on a des super vêtements maintenant. Nous sommes très enthousiastes.

Tu fais beaucoup de switch no comply que j’adore, es t u un switch no complier naturel ?
Je vais être honnête, je ne sais pas faire de regular no comply, je ne sais pas faire no comply 180, no comply 360 non plus, et aucune variation, je me défoncerais. Mais j’ai un bon feeling pour le switch 180, et je pense que c’est un mouvement similaire, ça marche bien pour moi.

Dernière question, avant de prendre ton train, quels sont tes prochains projets et plans que tu souhaite accomplir prochainement ?
Eh bien, je suppose que mon plan est de prendre le train ! Je veux essayer de participer davantage sur les réseaux sociaux et vous savez, j’ai réalisé à quel point c’est un excellent outil et je pense que nous avons été si têtus et peut-être naïfs, et je veux filmer plus, vous savez. Avec le confinement du Covid, cela peut sembler horrible à dire, mais cela a en fait été une bénédiction pour de nombreux skateurs, je suis ravi de sortir et de skater et d’apprendre de nouveaux tricks car il n’y a rien de stagnant dans le skateboard en ce moment. donc je pense que je suis excité de revenir en France. J’ai hâte de rentrer à la maison, j’ai hâte de remettre ma jambe en marche, j’ai hâte d’avoir Zach derrière sa VX, de faire plus de Stroblack, j’ai hâte de manger des chocolatines à nouveau, je vais rentrer à la maison essayer de trouver une bonne boulangerie. Il y a tout simplement trop de choses à faire !
