Zach Chamberlin “Sprinkles” Interview

Zach Chamberlin is one of those guys crazy enough to produce – in 2016 and independently – a full length documenting what he sees as the essence of skate. All this while the rest of us invest zero dollar posting one-minute videos on Instagram. Bright Moment is the name of his latest project. The video has been mostly shot in San Francisco, a city he’s now calling home but Zach will also take you to all the places wind and wanderlust sent him off to inbetween small jobs. Needless to say this is exactly the kind of project your banker wants to hear about and finance. NOT. Zach can’t stay idle. He’s always striving for the most insane angles, riding at mach speed, slaloming between buses, cars and poles while shadowing the skater. In comparison, it would probably feel super easy to shoot a close up of a starving jaguar chasing a gazelle in the middle of the night. If you run into Zach, give him some Sprinkles, buy his DVD so that he can go get a haircut but most importantly so that he can keep up the good work.

Bright Moment est le nom de son dernier projet, ça se passe à San Fansisco, sa ville d’adoption, et partout ailleurs où il aura réussi à attraper un avion, en choisissant sa destination en fonction de la direction du vent, entre deux petits boulots. Autant dire tout de suite que se lancer dans ce type d’aventure n’est absolument pas un argument crédible face à votre banquier au moment de demander un prêt.
Zach ne filme pas assis confortablement sur un trottoir attendant que le trick soit rentré. Il va chercher les angles les plus improbables, à mach 2, dans une descente, entre un bus et un poteau en restant constamment collé au skateur. Comparativement, il est sans doute plus facile de filmer en plan rapproché un guépard affamé poursuivant une gazelle en pleine nuit.
Si vous croisez Zach, faites lui un Sprinkles, achetez son DVD, d’abord pour qu’il aille chez le coiffeur, mais surtout qu’il continue son œuvre.

 

How and when was the video released?
Bright Moments was released in GoldenGate park in San Francisco on May 20th using a generator, blow up screen, projector and speakers.  The only hype was a flyer made the night before saying to meet up in the neighborhood  and the location will be announced (“like a rave”) when it’s time to play the film. So from 8:59-9:00pm the crowd went from zero to full house.  This was loosely the plan to avoid getting kicked out before the video even started. So I made sure to get it started right at 9.  The best part is that the video played the whole way through zero complaints and no fucking cops. Everyone stayed, chilled, talked, drank beer and helped me take everything down and clean up super well. It was a cool community vibe and really special to know good people come together for good things.
I made 200 copies for this trip I’m on now (with Richard Hart to Budapest Bristol and France) to sprinkle premieres with. I screen printed almost two hundred all unique sprinkle hand patches to put inside with the DVDs. I wanted to use as much recycled stuff as possible.  In three weeks I’ll be back in SF with the larger run of DVDs to sell on my website zachchamberlin.com and to distributors. If people order from me I’ll sneak some hand screen printed goods and other sprinkles.

Comment la vidéo a été présentée ?
Bright Moments a été projetée au Golden Gate park à San Fransisco le 20 mai avec un générateur, un écran pliable, un vidéoprojecteur et des enceintes. La seule annonce était un flyer fait la nuit précédente qui indiquait de se rencontrer dans le quartier et le lieu de la projection serait annoncée (comme pour une rave) au moment de passer la vidéo. C’était le plan pour éviter de se faire virer avant que la vidéo n’eut été projetée. Donc j’ai fait en sorte que ça commence à 21h. Le meilleur est que la vidéo a été projetée sans aucune plainte et aucun flic. Tout le monde est resté, a causé, bu des bières et a aidé à tout ranger et nettoyer. C’était une ambiance bon enfant qui réunissait les bonnes personnes pour la bonne cause.
J’ai fait 200 copies pour le trip que j’ai fait avec Richard Hart de Budapest Bristol et la France pour faire des avant premières. J’ai imprimé presque 200 « Sprinkle Hands » unique pour insérer avec le DVD. J’ai voulu utiliser un maximum de trucs recyclés. Un fois revenu à SF, un plus grand nombre de DVD sera en vente sur mon site zachchamberlin.com et par l’intermédiaire des distributeurs. .

Could you explain what’s the concept behind “Sprinkles”?
The concept was just a feeling and slang word originating like a fist dap or high five when my homies and I were younger. It’s still the same but it has morphed for me over the years.  This earth is beautiful but what is called the 1st 2nd and 3rd world by society standard makers is sometimes horrendous.  The sprinkle represents acknowledging the situation for its purities and then is a reminder to focus on the extra little good thing on top of any situational donut.

Peux-tu expliquer le concept de Sprinkles. ?
Au départ c’était juste de l’argo venant d’un geste comme se taper poing contre poing ou le high five qu’on faisait avec les potes plus jeunes. C’est toujours ça mais ça a évolué au cours des années. La Terre est superbe mais ce qui est appelé 1^er 2éme ou tiers monde par ceux qui décident des standards de la société est juste horrible. Le «Sprinkle » représente le fait d’être reconnaissant envers la situation pour ses puretés et un rappel qu’il faut profiter des petites choses positives qui existent dans n’importe quelle situation.

We have seen a couple of photos showing an amount of 100  more vx tapes, it was all for this video?
The minidv castle was inspired from within the walls of Bordeaux France including some vx parts that got decapitated. That was 100 tapes for 3 months with countless skaters. One of my brothers from another mother’s nation Aymeric Nocus filmed some of those tapes also. Bright Moments used countless.  I got boxes on crates on briefcases of them.

Tu avais montré une image de piles de plus de 100 cassettes l’année dernière, tout était pour la video ?
L’image du château cassettes minidv vient de Bordeaux. 100 cassettes utilisées en 3 mois avec un nombre sans fin de skaters. Aymeric Nocus, en a aussi filmé. J’ai ai utilisé beaucoup pour Bright Moments. J’ai ai des boites et des caisses.

 

Since a collaboration with Magenta “old woops new groove” and recently a little edit for Push Periodical. What have you been up to? .
This video took a lot of work.  A lot of ins and outs.  A lot of stories to weave together that can have new meaning every time It’s watched. Hopefully somebody that doesn’t know anyone in the video will understand everything is connected. A connection that Matt Field explained to me that he felt from the video (in my reiteration) was a feeling that can only be portrayed by longtime friends and connections through raw, good timing, spur of the moment fun sessions brought together naturally instead if through a paycheck.  Nobody knew the video was coming out so no one had any real anxieties about the video or getting the ballbusting banger. So besides this I’ve worked with Northern Company a lot because it’s all my friends without any hoops to jump through with editing and I’m still contributing footage all the time to little projects. Also I’m working on clothing and sprinkles gear.

Tu avais réalisé “Old woops new groove” avec Magenta et des clip pour Push Periodical. Entre temps, qu’as-tu fait ?
La vidéo a nécessité beaucoup de travail. Beaucoup de tenant et aboutissants. Pleins d’histoires qui ont une nouvelle signification à chaque fois que je la regarde. J’espère que quelqu’un qui ne connait personne dans la vidéo va comprendre que tout est connexion. Matt Field m’a expliqué cette connexion qu’il a ressentie pour cette vidéo, le feeling qui ne peut découler que  grâce aux amitiés de longue date, le bons temps au moment des bonnes sessions, le tout montés ensemble naturellement plutôt que par l’attrait du gain. Personne ne savait que la vidéo allait sortir, et personne n’était vraiment stressé par la vidéo ou par un gros truc à devoir balancer.
En dehors de ça, j’ai beaucoup travaillé avec The Northern Co car ils sont tous mes potes, et je continue à contribuer à pas mal de petits projets. Aussi, je bosse sur des vêtements et accessoires « Sprinkles »

 
You worked on different projects which are kind off “independent” with no big budget, how do you manage to afford tapes, trips… ?
Work.  A lot of side gigs in SF and working on farms outside of the city. My vacations are skate trips and sometimes I can get a little help to make them happen. My lady and I like to ride the train around too for vacay.

Les projets sur lesquels tu t’es investi se situent dans la catégorie “indépendants” sans budget. Comment te débrouilles tu pour financer les cassettes, les trips … ?
Le travail. Beaucoup de petits jobs à SF et je bosse dans des fermes autour de SF. Mes vacances sont des skate trips et parfois je bénéficie d’un peu soutien pour les réaliser. Ma femme et moi aimons prendre le train pour partir en vacances.

 

You ve been filming for a while now, do you think your way of filming skate has changed, if so, how?
I think the spot asks for ways to be filmed also the movement of skateboarding talks.  Over the years  I’ve been able to gradually figure out methods to deeper translate what these spots and skating are saying besides “-trick, trick… Trick trick trick-” And focus on fluidity and style of the spot and the skating and read between some lines.

Tu filmes depuis déjà pas mal de temps, penses-tu que ta manière de filmer a évolué ?
Je pense que c’est le spot qui définit la manière de filmer, après c’est le skate lui-même qui parle. Au cours des années, j’ai réussi à trouver petit à petit les méthodes pour traduire ce que les spots et le skate représentent, plutôt que « tricks, tricks, tricks… ». Je me concentre sur la fluidité et le style et lis entre les lignes.

When you start a project, what are your expectations ?
Projects for me tend to unfold rather than be directed in the beginning. Then I normally rely on editing. After something takes form a little bit then it’s motivating to see it through to the end with an idea of what the end will be. Otherwise it can be a longer process than expected most of the time.  Haha. A way longer process….

Quand tu te lance sur un nouveau projet, quelles sont tes attentes ?
Pour moi, les projets se construisent dans leur déroulement plutôt qu’avec une vraie direction initiale. Après, je me base beaucoup sur le montage. A partir du moment où ça prend forme, c’est motivant de se projeter sur ce à quoi ça ressemblera à la fin. A côté de ça, cela peut prendre plus de temps que prévu, la plupart des fois. Beaucoup plus de temps ah ah …

Which era of the skateboarding SF history has inspired you the most? And why?
Right now is the most inspiring.  I feel like it’s a golden time.  Ryan Garshel put out his vid. Collin reed is putting his vid out. Hyped I got mine finished and out. There’s a lot of really great people in those videos if not every single dude in them and the thing important about these videos for me is that everyone is working on them because there is a genuine feel behind it besides a paycheck. Everyone’s friends. Not paycheck forced tour van dog fighters.  For sf skate history I like that vibe Embarcadero days, tommy Guerrero, homie vibes are why I’m in SF, stereo videos tin can folklore and visual sound also the forties clothing video amigos and the old sheep shoes video with Matt Field.
First thing that I remember giving me a real good feeling of sf was in 411 when they did the house/roomies section in SF with Kenny Reed Elias Bingham I think Cairo Foster and some other cats living together in San Francisco and they go skate old union square.

Quelle est ton époque favorite pour les video à SF ?
En ce moment, c’est la plus excitante. J’ai l’impression que c’est l’âge d’or. Ryan Garshell sort sa vidéo (The GX1000 video). Colin Read est en train de sortir la sienne (Spririt Quest). Je suis très excité d’avoir fini et sorti la mienne. Ils y a beaucoup de gens super intéressants, si ce n’est tous, dans ces vidéos. Le truc important à propos de celles-ci, c’est que ceux qui s’y impliquent le font car il y a un feeling authentique en dehors de l’argent. Tout le monde est pote.
Pour l’histoire à SF, j’aime l’ambiance de l’époque de l’Embarcadero, Tommy Guerrero, l’ambiance amicale m’a motivé pour venir à SF. Les vidéo Stereo Tin Can Folklore et Visual Sound, la video Forties Clothing Amigos et la vieille vidéo Sheep shoes avec Matt Field.
Le premier souvenir que j’ai d’avoir eu un bon feeling sur ce qu’est SF était dans une 411, quand ils avaient fait une part House/Roomies à SF avec Kenny Reed, Elias Bingham et je crois Cairo Foster avec d’autre gars qui habitaient ensemble et allaient skater Union Square, l’ancienne version.

 

In your opinion, what is the future of skate videos?
Thirty years left. Haha. I don’t know. I’m gonna keep filming and seeing where it goes. I think other people will want to make videos for a lot longer still.  Full lengths are hard for people. It’s long these days.  But if you have a story to tell or weave connections together or just wanna put out the mega bust altogether at one time the video will live.

A ton avis, quel est le futur des vidéos de skate ?
Trente ans ! Ah ah. Je ne sais pas, je vais continuer à filmer et voir où ça mène. Je pense que les gens auront envie de faire des vidéos encore longtemps. Les full length, c’est dur et long aujourd’hui. Mais si tu as une histoire à raconter, si tu veux  tisser des liens ou juste sortir le méga truc avec tous les trucs ouf au même moment, la vidéo continuera de vivre.

What others skate videos get you hyped ?
I want to see spirit quest for sure! Gx vid is crazy hype! Josh Roberts in Australia is legend! Local cats doing shit gets me hyped! Blobys boys, kpee crew in Tokyo, Yoan taillandier has footage I’d love to see when he is ready.

Quelles sont les videos qui t’inspirent ?
J’ai définitivement envie de voir Spririt Quest ! La video GX1000 est folle ! Josh Roberts d’Australie est une légende. Les locaux qui font leurs propres trucs m’inspirent. Les Blobys, le crew Kpee à Tokyo, Yann Taillandier a des images et j’adorerais les voir quand ce sera prêt.
