Benny Fairfax interview

I first met Benny when I visited London for the very first time, 13 years ago. Time flies… Once I watched him skating Southbank, he suddenly became my favorite local there.  He was still a student a the time and already fully part of the Palace Wayward Boys Choir. Since then, he’s crossed the ocean, made the dream come true , which was well deserved. My only regret is he’s never dropped a part which does justice to the talent he possesses, not yet anyway. Now after joining his friends at Palace skateboards, he’s finally come full circle.
We sat down at a “Prêt à Manger” for this interview, in the middle of a filming mission for the next Palace video. Benny was totally relaxed, as usual.  Meanwhile, Danny Brady was hurrying the whole crew, trying to take everybody to the next spot.

 

Could you speak about your hometown New Milton?
It’s kind of little country town right on the edge of New Forest which is like a national park in England and there is the coast in the south as well. So you have beach and forest, it’s a nice place to grow up. It’s also pretty much a retirement place, a lot of old people come there for their retirement.

 

Peux-tu nous parler de ta ville d’origine, New Milton ?
C’est une petite ville de province, au bord la forêt de New Forrest, c’est un parc national anglais, c’est aussi au bord de la mer. Donc, tu as la plage d’un côté et la forêt de l’autre, c’est une ville où il fait bon vivre. C’est aussi un endroit de villégiature pour les retraités, il y en a beaucoup.

 

You also spent some time in Caribbean?
Yes I spent a small portion of my childhood there, at the age of 8. I went to the school over there for a little bit. My mum’s side of my family is all from there.

 

Tu es passé par les Caraïbes aussi ?
Oui, j’ai passé une petite partie de mon enfance là-bas, à l’âge de 8 ans, je suis allé un peu à l’école là-bas. La famille du côté de ma mère est de là.

 

When did you come to London for the first time?
Well, me and my little crew of friends I started skating with would all come up here . We would  all take the train to London and buy a one day Travelcard. We were 13 to 15 years old, just coming up here for the weekend to skate around the city. Then I moved here for the University when I was 17.

 

Quand es-tu venu à Londres pour la première fois ?
En fait, j’y allais avec mon petit crew avec qui j’ai commencé le skate. On prenait tous le train pour Londres et on achetait un Travel Card pour une journée. On avait entre 13 et 15 ans, on venait juste pendant le week-end, pour skater la ville toute la journée. Je me suis installé ici quand j’ai intégré l’université, à 17 ans.

 

At the same time as Joey Pressey ?
He moved a year and a half before me, and he was telling me all the time “you should come skate to London, there are so many spots”, he was a big influence for me.

 

En meme temps que Joey Pressey ?
Il est venu 1 ans et demi avant moi, et il me disait toujours »Tu devrais venir skater à Londres, y a plein de spots ». Il a été un grande influence pour moi.

 

What the London scene looked like at that time?
There were definitely not as many skaters that there are now. Now, skateboarding is so huge, there are so many skaters in London. When I first came, there were quite a lot of skaters but everyone kind of knew who each other was. I used to skate South Bank all time, I still do actually.

 

A quoi ressemblait la scène londonienne à ce moment ?
Il y avait beaucoup moins de skaters qu’il y a aujourd’hui. Le skate est devenu très gros, il y a beaucoup de skaters à Londres. Quand je suis venu pour la première fois, il y avait déjà pas mal de skaters mais tout le monde se connaissait plus ou moins. Je skatais tout le temps à South Bank, et je continue à le faire en fait.

What did you study at the university?
I did a media course, filmmaking.

 

Qu’étudiais-tu à l’Université ?
Je passais un diplôme de média, cinéma.

 

Were you focused on it ?
Well  kind of I’d say, but definitely I was going on skate trips as well whilst I was at uni, I slacked off a little bit. That was the time I got sponsored. When I look back on it , I wish I would’ve been more focused on my studies. But I loved skating too much, I wanted to pursue that.

 

Tu étais beaucoup investi ?
Je dirais, oui assez… mais je partais toujours en trip aussi en même temps que les cours, j’ai un peu lâché. C’était au moment où j’ai eu des sponsors. Quand je regarde en arrière, j’aurais aimé me concentrer plus sur les études mais j’aime trop le skate, j’ai voulu continuer et m’investir dans ça.

 

A few years later, you met Jason Lee and Chris Pastras and you moved to LA. How did that happen?
I used to ride for WESC, the clothing brand. so I met them in Sweden while I was filming for “In Motion”, the Sidewalk magazine video. Neil Chester was the filmer, that day we were skating with Ali Boulala, Chris, Mark Baines… They mentioned they were starting Stereo back up again. Ches showed them some footage of me and I guess there were kind of into it.

 

Quelques années plus tard, tu rencontres Chris Pastras et Jason Lee et tu es parti à L.A.. Comment tout cela est arrivé ?
C’est arrivé quand je skatais pour cette marque de vêtements WESC. Je les ai rencontrés en Suède pendant que je filmais pour « In Motion » la vidéo Sidewalk Mag. Neil Chester était le filmeur, ce jour-là, on skatait avec Ali Boulala, Chris Pastras et Mark Baines… Ils avaient dit qu’ils montaient Stereo à nouveau. Chester leur a montré des images de moi, et je crois que ça leur a plu.

 

So they asked you to come to LA ?
Yes, pretty much. They first asked me when we did this trip from LA up to San Francisco. I guess it was a little trial period and it went pretty well. We had an article in Transworld, Skin Phillips was shooting. And then on that same trip I just extended my ticket to stay out there for 90 days.I can’t remember if it was the first trip or my second trip over there, maybe it was after I’d already been out here once before.

 

Et tu es parti à LA après ça ?
Oui, c’est à peu près ça. Ils m’ont demandé de venir la première fois lorsqu’on a fait ce trip de LA à San Fransisco, je crois que c’était une période d’essai pour moi et ça s’est bien passé. Il y a eu un article dans Transworld, Skin Phillips a shooté des photos. Pendant ce trip, j’ai reporté mon billet de retour de 90 jours. Ou alors peut-être qu’il s’agissait de mon deuxième trip là-bas.

 

You landed that nollie heel at the Santa Monica triple set on your first time at the spot ?
I was with Jason Hernandez who was filming, Atiba Jefferson shooting photos, Clint Peterson and Steve Nesser. We went there because Steve wanted to skate it. He was trying to varial flip it and his board bounced up and smacked him in the face and couldn’t skate anymore.

 

Tu as rentré ce fameux nollie heel sur le triple set la première fois que tu as vu le spot ?
J’étais avec Jason Hernadz qui filmait, Atiba Jefferson qui shootais, Clint Peterson et Steve Nesser. Nous sommes allés là-bas car Steve Nesser voulait faire varial flip. Il a essayé et ça board a rebondi et il l’a prise dans la tronche et il ne pouvait plus skater.

 

So you were the substitute?
Ahah yeah I was like ‘I’m trying my trick instead’. So it was completely by fluke, it wasn’t planned.

 

Donc tu es venu en tant que remplaçant ?
Ahah oui je me suis dit, je vais faire mon trick à la place. C’était donc complètement par hasard, ça n’était pas prévu.

 

You had a pretty bad injury a couple of years later, what happened?
The really bad one I had was in 2006. We were skating downtown LA, Jason Hernandez was filming, he destroyed the footage after that, I never want to see that ! We had the best day, we were a big crew with Brian Brown, Danny Montoya, Raymond Molinar, Rob Gonzales, Clint Peterson, cruising all around downtown a Sunday, it was empty. At the end of the day, I tried to switch flip this gap, we got kicked out so I had one last try. I dislocated my ankle and broke my leg. I had to get an ambulance, surgery. I was on crushes for 6 months and no skating for a year. My leg was like a matchstick, I had to do a lot of rehab and stuff like that.

 

Tu as eu une très mauvaise blessure quelques temps après, comment est ce arrivé ?
La plus grave est celle que j’ai eue en 2006. On skatait le centre de L.A. avec Jason Hernandez qui filmait, il a détruit la bande, je ne veux jamais voir ça ! Nous avions eu une super journée, avec un bon crew, Brian Brown, Danny Montoya, Raymond Molinar, Rob Gonzales, Clint Peterson. C’était un dimanche, les rues étaient désertes. En fin de journée, j’essaye switch flip sur ce gap, on s’est fait viré donc j’avais plus qu’un essai, je me suis disloqué la cheville et cassé la jambe, j’ai dû partir en ambulance, être opéré, marché avec des béquilles pendant 6 mois et pas de skate pendant une année. Ma jambe était comme une allumette, j’ai dû faire beaucoup de rééducation.

 

You were quite lucky to keep your sponsors?
I’d just got my first box of Adidas 2 weeks before…  I was really lucky, Bryce Kanight was the team manager, he’s a rad dude. I also had a really good relationship with Jason Lee and Chris Pastras they were like “you’re part of the company, just get back”.

 

Tu as eu finalement beaucoup de chance de garder tes sponsors ?
Je venais de recevoir mes premières paires d’Adidas deux semaines avant… J’ai eu beaucoup de chance car Bryce Kanight était team manager à ce moment-là, c’est un super gars. J’avais une bonne relation avec Chris et Jason aussi, ils me disaient « Tu fais partie de la marque, reviens à nous »

 

 

You finally joined Palace which was quite expected. What’s  your relationship with those guys?
I’ve know them from ages. It was a natural thing. I knew I was gonna do it  a year before it happened. I’m close to Chewy Cannon as well, he was like “What’s going on? Why aren’t you on yet?”

 

Tu as enfin rejoins Palace, ce qui était assez attendu. Quelles relationnel as-tu avec les gars de la marque ?
Je les connais depuis toujours. C’était quelque chose de très naturel. Je savais que j’irais chez Palace un an avant que c’est arrivé. Je suis très proche de Chewy  Cannon et il me disait toujours « Qu’est-ce que tu fais ? Pourquoi tu n’es pas encore avec nous? »

 

Why did it take so long to join Palace?
I guess it was hard because I rode for Stereo for quite a long time, those guys  gave me a good opportunity and a lot of good stuff happened out there. We were really close friends too, Chris and Jason let me live in their house for a year, it’s like breaking up with a girlfriend. That and also at the time they weren’t doing so well and they owed me a bunch of money and they were kind of taking their time paying it and I was like well I could quit right now but like you guys  owe me thousands of dollars…  it was really like that before I quit.

 

Pourquoi avoir attendu aussi longtemps ?
Je crois que c’était très dur car je ridais depuis très longtemps pour Stereo. Ces gars m’ont donné une super opportunité et beaucoup  de bonnes choses sont arrivées. Nous étions aussi des amis très porches. Et aussi, à ce moment, ça ne tournait pas aussi bien et ils me devaient de l’argent. Genre c’était : Je pourrais partir dès maintenant mais vous devez me payer mes milliers de dollars, c’était à peu près ça avant que je parte.

Tell us about the birth of Palace, it was actually an apartment in Brixton right?
That’s right, it was a flat in Brixton where everyone used to stay,  the guys who actually lived there were Snowy, Edson, a friend of us Benny but there were also 10 other dudes who pretty much lived there as well. We had a massive stock of VHS, like over a hundred  VHS tapes, you do your homework you now, ahah get back from skating and then you do your homework watching VHS tapes.

 

Parles nous de la naissance de Palace, en fait c’était le nom donné à un appartement à Brixton, c’est ça ?
C’est ça, c’était un appart à Brixton, où tout la bande a logé, ceux  qui habitaient là officiellement étaient Snowy, Edson, un de nos pote Benny mais 10 autres mecs sont passés par là aussi. Nous avions un énorme stock de VHS, plus d’une centaine, on faisait nos devoirs ah ah tu reviens du skate et ensuite ru révises en regardant des cassettes.

 

What about PWBC ?
That kind of came from the Waterloo Palace, after the Brixton Palace, a bunch of guys moved to Waterloo. Stuart Hammond has come up with the name. They were three of them who charred one room sleeping on the floor, and other people would come stay on top of that. That was a crazy skate house. Good times!

 

Et comment est venu PWBC ?
En gros c’est venu du Waterloo Palace, après celui de Brixton, une bonne partie des gars ont déménagé vers Waterloo. Stuart Hammond a trouvé le nom. Trois d’entre eux partageaient une chambre à Waterloo, et dormaient sur le sol, et d’autres venaient en plus d’eux. C’était une sacrée skate house. De bons souvenirs.

 

I used to check those little edit on internet back in the days with the crew
Yeah it was Lev, and the PWBC News came after that, I don’t even know if he knew he was gonna start a company then, he just made some funny clips. He’s gone a long way from then.

 

J’ai le souvenir de regarder les montages sur internet à l’époque avec toute la bande.
Oui c’était Lev, et le PWBC News est arrivé après, je ne sais même pas si il savait qu’il allait monter une marque, il faisait juste des clips sympas. Il y a eu du chemin depuis tout ça.

 

You’re filming for the Palace video, how is it going ?
It’s gonna be a full length video all filmed in London, with the whole team, all gonna be filmed on VHS

 

Tu filme pour la prochaine vidéo Palace, comment ça se passe ?
Ce sera une vidéo « full length », entièrement filmée à Londres, avec le tout le team, et entièrement filmée en VHS.

 

Even Shawn Powers and Juan Saavedra have to film in London only ?
Ah there might be exceptions! I think Juan and Shawn got a VHS guy in France and NY.

 

Même Shawn Powers et Juan Sarvedd ne doit filmer qu’à Londres ?
Ah il pourrait y avoir des exceptions ! Je crois que Juan et Shawn ont un gars avec une VHS en France et à NYC.

 

You have new filmers right?
There are several filmers. At the beginning, Lev was filiming a lot. I mean He’s running the whole company; he’s too busy for that these days. Now we have a few different guys who film.

 

Vous avez un nouveau filmeur apparemment ?
Nous en avons plusieurs. Au départ, Lev était le seul à filmer. Mais maintenant il gère la marque, il est trop occupé pour ça. Maintenant nous avons quelques gars qui filment pour nous.

 

Have all of them got the same camera?
Brady just got a new one actually. They made a little mount so you can screw the fisheye on it. Before it was glue on it, now you can change it easier.

 

Ils ont tous une caméra similaire ?
Oui, Danny Brady vient d’en avoir une nouvelle en fait. Ils ont fabriqué un support sur lequel tu peux visser le fisheye. Avant, c’était plus ou moins collé dessus.

 

Is that stuff hard to find ?
Yeah it’s quite hard to find: Ebay ! The batteries and the chargers are the hardest things to come by because they don’t last too long, some might last 20 min some might last 1 hour. You never know, so you have to get a lot of batteries.

 

Le matériel doit être difficile à trouver, non ?
Oui, c’est assez difficile, Ebay ! Les batteries et les chargeurs sont les plus durs à dénicher car ils ne durent pas longtemps, tu ne sais jamais avant, parfois 1 heure ou parfois 20 mn. Donc tu dois prendre de nombreuses batteries avec toi.

 

You’re also filming for the Adidas video ?
That’s right, it’s going good, we’re doing a lot of trips. There is basically one crew filming somewhere in the world all the time. Because there are so many guys, something like 23 guys. Everyone should have footage, I guess. I feel like nowadays, a 2 hours long video is too much. I think they want to make it short and sweet, maybe some guys will share parts and some guys will have full part. We will see !

 

Tu filme également pour la vidéo Adidas ?
C’est ça, ça se passe bien, nous allons dans de nombreux trips. En gros, il y a toujours un crew en train de filmer quelque part dans le monde, chaque jour. Car il y a tellement de riders, je crois un truc comme 23. Tout le monde devrait avoir des images. Je crois qu’aujourd’hui, une vidéo de 2 heures, c’est trop long. Je crois qu’ils veulent faire quelque chose de court et de qualité, peut être que certains auront une part partagée avec d’autres, et certain auront un part complète. On verra bien !

 

What inspire you nowdays ?
Old stuff ! Gino Ianucci in Trilogy, Jason Dill back in the day. I don’t know, there are so much crap out there this days, just none of them get me stoked unless it’s like… I don’t know, it’s all about style really. Everyone can do tricks these days but that doesn’t mean it looks good. With regard to new stuff, I get stoked to see my friends. I enjoy watching footage way more when I know or like the person.

 

Par quoi es tu inspiré maintenant ?
Les vieux trucs ! Gino dans la Trilogy, Jason Dill à époque. Aujourd’hui il y a tellement de trucs naze, aucun ne m’inspire plus que ça. C’est juste une question de style, vraiment. De nos jours, tout le monde peut faire des tricks, mais ça ne veut pas dire que ça rend bien. Aujourd’hui, j’aime regarder les images de mes potes. J’apprécie beaucoup plus que je connais ou j’apprécie la personne !

 

Beside the Palace and Adidas videos, any other projects ?
Me and Brophy just started a wheels company together named Wayward wheels. Chewy Cannon, Lucien Clarke, Blondey McCoy, Lucas Puig, Miles Silvas ride for it. It’s a little project we’re doing. It’s pretty exciting. We’ve been in the industry for quite a long time, we know how it works, so we said : Let’s try something !
