Steve Durante “Update”

Steve is a man of few words but once you get to know him he has a lot to say. His skating comes across like its effortless but he sometimes has to work for it.  Steve is a true East Coast skateboarder who’s seen it all . I’m proud to have him as a friend and having him on my team is just icing on the cake.

What’s your favorite place in New Jersey and why?
Well I grew up and currently reside in Villas NJ which is the very bottom of South Jersey and my family and friends are here so I’d have to say that’s my favorite place.  But I spent a lot of time in North Jersey skating and hanging with friends and have a lot of history up there so I’ll just say I love every part of the Garden State!

Quel est ton endroit préféré du New Jersey et pourquoi ?
J’ai grandi et je vis encore à Villas, qui se trouve sur la pointe sud de l’état, ma famille et mes amis sont ici donc je dirais que c’est mon endroit préféré mais je passe beaucoup de temps dans le nord de l’état pour skater et traîner avec mes amis, j’ai vécu beaucoup de choses là-bas donc je dirai que j’adore l’ensemble.

You used to hang out a lot with Brian Wenning before you’ve both got hooked up by Habitat. Both of you seems to have taken opposite directions. Could you give a few words about this era ?
Well Brian got me hooked up with Habitat Crew when I was 18, it was life changing just to get a box from your all-time favorite company. As time went on I actually was supposed to ride for Alien Workshop and not Habitat… But I ended up on Habitat. Brian and I were still chilling every week. We chilled more than we skated together that’s just how we were. I went to Mexico one year with him and his family for Christmas it was amazing!  He’s done so much for skateboarding and opened a door to an innovation that we’ll never see again in skateboarding. At least anything good I’ll just say it was good while it lasted.

Tu traînais beaucoup avec Brian Wenning avant de skater pour Habitat. Depuis ça, vous avez eu un parcours opposé. Peux-tu nous parler de cette époque ?
Brian m’a fait rentrer chez Habitat quand j’avais 18 ans, recevoir un colis de ta marque préférée change ta vie. A ce moment, j’étais supposé skater pour Alien Workshop et pas Habitat mais j’ai fini chez Habitait. Brian et moi continuions de traîner ensemble toutes les semaines. On chillait plus que l’on skatait, on était comme ça. Une année je suis allé au Mexique avec lui et sa famille pour Noël, c’était incroyable ! Il a beaucoup apporté au skateboard et ouvert des portes pour l’innovation que nous ne sommes pas prêt de revoir. Je peux dire que tout allait bien du moment que ça durait.

Do you still see him sometimes?  What have you talked about the last time?
I haven’t talked or seen him in a while but in the past we’ll talk for an hour and not even bring up skating.

Tu le vois encore de temps en temps ? De quoi avez-vous parlé la dernière fois ?
Je ne lui ai pas parlé depuis un moment mais à l’époque on parlait pendant un heure sans mettre un pied sur un skate.

What was the best part of being am for Habitat ?
Fuck man just the fact that when I was a kid all I ever dreamed of was being sponsored by Alien or Habitat. My friends and I would go to Philly every weekend and we witnessed a lot of the footage from Photosynthesis go down in person. I’ve always looked up to Brian, Freddy, Tim and Rob. I was proud to be the latest addition to the New Jersey tradition. The NJ Scums had a good run with habitat for a while. Freddy is the last man standing. I miss those days we had some good times.

Quel était le côté le plus positif d’être amateur pour Habitat ?
Putain, juste le fait qu’étant gamin, j’ai toujours rêvé d’être sponsorisé par Alien ou Habitat, mes amis et moi allions tous les week-ends à Philly et avons été témoins en personne d’un paquet de footage de Photosynthesis. J’ai toujours eu du respect pour Brin (Wenning), Freddy (Gall), Tim (O’Connor) et Rob (Pluhowsky).  J’étais fier d’être la dernière recrue de la traduction du New Jersey. Les « rats » du New Jersey ont toujours eu un faible pour Habitat. Freddy est le dernier restant. Cette époque me manque, on avait du bon temps.

Why have you been kicked of Habitat ?
Probably from just not pulling my weight and with the addition of the newer am’s. I guess there just wasn’t room for me.

Pourquoi t’es-tu fait virer de chez Habitat ?
Probablement de ne pas avoir donné assez et aussi à cause de l’arrivée de nouveaux amateurs. Je suppose qu’il n’y avait pas de place pour moi.

Your Inahabitant part was amazing, and quite unexpected for a lot of people. How do you consider your progression now?
Thanks, that’s the part I’ve been the most happy with. Nowadays I  skate as much as I can. I’d say as far as progression wise it’s still there I just have to get hyped  and see what happens out there.

Ta part dans Inhabitant était vraiment bien et un peu inattendue pour beaucoup. Comment tu vois ta progression aujourd’hui ?
Merci, c’est la part dont je suis le plus fier. Aujourd’hui, je skate le plus que je peux, et tant que la progression est toujours là, j’ai juste à être inspiré et voir ce qui se passe.

You were filming for the I-Path video that never came out. How did you feel about the out come of “The Other Ones”. I fee like it was a lost video of sorts.
Yeah I feel like a lot of people maybe didn’t see it either. It was fun filming for that video. We went on a lot of good trips, doing demos and skating a lot of parks. Everyone on the team got along like family. There was a lot of shit going on over there, and all of a sudden I-Path didn’t want to do the video anymore. Long story short a bunch of us quit but we still wanted to put the video out. So Thad Corskey and the rest of us all chipped in to make it happen. We called it “The Other Ones”.

Tu as filmé pour la vidéo Ipath qui n’est jamais vraiment sortie. Comment vois-tu ce dénouement pour « The Other Ones », on dirait une vidéo perdue en quelques sortes ?
Oui presque personne ne l’a vu je pense. Filmer pour celle-là était amusant. Nous avons fait de bons trips, fait un paquet de démo et skaté pleins de parks. On se sentait en famille avec tout le team. Pas mal de problème sont arrivés et subitement I-Path ne voulait plus faire la vidéo. Pour faire court, un paquet d’entre nous est parti mais nous voulions toujours sortir la vidéo. Donc, Thad Corskey et le reste d’entre nous se sont cotisés pour y arriver. Nous l’avons appelé « The Other Ones ».

How did  Politic  skateboards  come in your life. ? Did you take part of the project or you just have been asked to join them?
Politic is a company started by two of my good friends from Albany, Damon and Chris. After everything fell apart with Habitat they hit me up telling me about the company and seeing if I was interested. At first I was very hesitated because I was very relieved after I got kicked off Habitat.  It was like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders because I was ready go back to real life no more stressing over deadlines for videos or photos.. Granted riding for Habitat was the best times on my life and they took great care of me and I was more than thankful for that but I knew I wasn’t gonna make a living off it. With Politic it seemed more laid back. I talked it over with Brian Brown and basically he said if you’re down I’m down…And that’s how it happened… Curtis Rapp and Jason Spivey are great additions and having Danny Renaud on board makes it complete.

Comment est apparu Politic. skateboards pour toi ? As-tu participé au projet ou on t’a juste demandé de skater pour la marque ?
Politic a été créé par deux de mes meilleurs amis d’Albany, Damon et Chris. Quand tout s’est arrêté avec habitat ils m’ont contacté pour me parler de leur projet et voir si ça m’intéressait et j’ai beaucoup hésité au départ. J’étais d’abord soulagé après avoir été viré de chez Habitat, j’avais un énorme poids sur les épaules car j’étais prêt à revenir à la vraie vie. Avoir la chance de rider pour Habitat représente les meilleurs moments de ma vie, ils ont pris soins de moi et je leur en suis reconnaissant mais savais que ça n’allais pas durer.
Le plan avec Politic au départ c’était moi et Brian Brown, nous en avons parlé et on s’est dit si t’es chaud alors moi aussi et c’est comme ça qu’a démarré Politic. Curtis Rapp et Jason Spivey sont de super recrues et avoir Danny Renaud de retour sur un skate est la cerise sur le gâteau.

Does the “pro status” change anything in your day to day?
Nah it doesn’t feel any different it’s just cool to see my name on a board I never thought that would happen.

Ton nouveau statut de pro skater a-t-il changé ton quotidien ?
Non je ne ressens pas de différence c’est juste cool de voir mon nom sur une planche, je n’aurais pas pensé que ça arriverait un jour.

Do you feel any pressure?
No not at all, I do what I can when I have the time to get things done. It’s awesome riding for your homies company. Politic is blowing up though I’m sure I’ll be kicked off sooner than later for slacking…ha-ha. Nah its good though, they have my back.

Ressens-tu une quelconque pression ?
Non pas du tout, je fais ce que je peux quand je peux. Le fait de rider pour ses potes est génial, Politic va se développer bien que je suis sûr de me faire virer un jour ou l’autre pour m’être trop laissé aller… Ahah non tout va bien, ils peuvent compter sur moi.

Who got the best style around?
This dude Cricket. Cricket is a legend from Ohio, he’s just the best dude ever we’ll just leave it at that.

Qui a le meilleur style ?
Ce mec Cricket, c’est une légende qui vient de l’Ohio, c’est le plus fou et le meilleur gars, oui disons juste ça.

Have you got a « real » job beside skating by now?
Yeah just went back to the restaurant I’ve worked at since I was a kid. They take great care of me but I wouldn’t call it a real job. Its work, I work 5-6 days a week, but it’s like working for my family over there.

As-tu un “vrai” travail à côté du skate en ce moment ?
Oui je viens de revenir travailler dans le restaurant où je travaillais que j’étais plus jeune, ils sont cool avec moi mais je n’appellerais pas ça un “vrai” job. Je travaille 5 ou 6 jours par semaine, mais c’est comme travailler en famille.

Did you find that being a professional skateboarder is a lot of work and being gifted and good on a board is not enough? 
Fuck man, I worked my ass off to get to where I’m at in skating and its been harder than any other job. No matter how easy skating is for someone, it’s still never easy. Stressing over tricks and spots it never ends.

As-tu découvert qu’être skater pro est beaucoup de travail et qu’être juste bon et doué ne suffit pas ?
Putain j’ai bossé très dur pour obtenir ce que j’ai avec le skate, pour moi c’était plus dur que n’importe quel travaille que j’ai eu. Peu importe comment peut être facile de skater pour quelqu’un, c’est jamais facile. Le stress que peuvent apporter les tricks ou les spots ne s’arrête jamais.

What are your short time projects? Some more coverage coming?
Right now we are working on a re-edit of some of my older footage that was never put out around the time of the “Other Ones”  video. So that should be kinda tight.  Politic Promo is coming this Fall. Trying to do what I can for that. Got some things in the works.

Quels sont tes plans à venir ? Des images à venir ?
En ce moment, nous travaillons sur un montage de vieux footages qui ne sont pas sortis du temps de « The Other Ones ». Ca devrait être serré. Une promo Politic arrive à l’automne. J’essaie de bosser là-dessus. J’ai donc pas mal de truc en cours.
