Conversation with Kevin Terpening

You’re from Ohio, is Alien Workshop bigger or more popular there than in the other states ?
I’m not sure how it is now but It definitely seemed like most of the skaters repped it pretty hard when I was growing up.  A lot of the riders were in the east coast or skating there a lot back then so I think that helped a lot.  I think theres a sort of pride that Ohio skaters have for the Workshop.  Its so sick that they run it from there and all the ideas come from there.

Tu viens de l’Ohio, Alien Workshop est-il plus gros ou polulaire quand dans les autres états ?
Je n’ai ce pas ce qu’il en est aujourd’hui mais quand j’y ai grandi presque tout les skaters étaient à fond sur Alien. Beaucoup des riders étaient sur la côte est ou skataient beaucoup là-bas donc je pense que ça a beaucoup joué. Je pense que les skaters de l’Ohio ont une sorte de fierté pour Alien Workshop. C’est dingue que la direction et les idées viennent de là-bas.

When did you realize that you wanted to devote yourself to skateboarding and maybe trying a career ?
think it was when I first started to go on trips and stuff but I never really think about it like that though.  I mean to a certain extent I do, but It seems too funny to think of it like some big career!  Its a job for sure.  You have to do certain things and work hard but its still just skating. Trying to make cool shit and put out stuff for people to see.  I didn’t move to LA to try to get sponsored and make money. I got lucky and it somehow worked out.  So I’m stoked!   but It will all end one day and ill have to live a normal life, which I hate thinking about.

Quand as tu réalisé que tu voulais t’investir dans le skate et essayer de faire carrière ?
Les choses sont venues quand j’ai commencé à partir en trip mais je n’y ai jamais vraiment pensé. En fait j’y pense d’une certaine manière, mais ça semble trop amusant de voir ça comme une carrière ! C’est un travail, c’est sûr. Tu doit faire certaines choses et travailler dur mais ça reste du skate. Essayer de faire des choses cool et sortir des trucs pour être vu. Je ne suis pas venu à LA pour essayer de trouver des sponsors ou gagner de l’argent. J’ai eu de la chance et ça a marché. Donc je suis comblé ! Par contre cela va finir par s’arrêter un jour et je devrai vivre une vie normal, ce à quoi je déteste penser !

A couple of years ago, you moved to LA with your homies from Ohio, did you think that was a dream come true at the time ? How did you feel at this time?
Shit. Its been six and a half years! Thats insane for me to think about.  I feel like I haven’t done anything! haha.  I was psyched man.  It kinda did feel like a dream come true because thats what me and my friends always wanted to but I could never imagined it actually happening.  That was such a sick time. I was 19, just finished high school and I jumped into this whole new world.  It was insane that I did now that I look back.  I wasn’t scared.  I skated all over the place and took trains and buses all over.  I loved it.  Thank you Scott and Neil for helping me.

Tu es arrivé à LA il y a quelques années avec tes amis de l’Ohio, tu considère que c’était un rêve qui devenait réalité à ce moment ?
Merde. Ça fait déjà 6 ans et demi ! Ça me semble irréel en y réfléchissant. J’ai l’impression que je n’ai rien fait ahah ! J’étais à fond. C’était en effet comme un rêve qui devenait réalité car c’est ce que moi et mes potes voulions toujours faire mais je n’imaginais pas que cela pouvait arriver en fait. C’était vraiment le bon temps. J’avais 19 ans, je venais de finir le lycée et j’ai sauté dans ce nouveau monde. C’est fou quand j’y repense. J’étais insouciant. Je skatais dans beaucoup d’endroits en prenant des trains et des bus de partout, j’adorais. Merci à Scott et Neil de m’avoir aidé.

You got no-comply variations skills. Do you think we will see more footplants or handplants on street in the near future? Scott Bourne said a while ago that people doesn’t use their body enough.?
I think I’ve been seeing a lot of that stuff already.  I mean they’re fun to do.  Thats why I do them.  Fuck, a straight no comply onto a handrail would be so fuckin rad!

Tu es à l’aise en No-comply et ses variations. Penses tu qu’on va voir plus de footplats ou handplants en street dans le futur ?
Je pense qu’on voit déjà pas mal des ces tricks en ce moment. Pour moi, qu’il sont marrants à faire, c’est pourquoi j’en fait. Putain, un non comply direct sur un handrail serait super rad !

Talking about tricks, I think I never seen a simple no comply to nose slide, I guess you can do it, no ? ahah
Thats funny because the first day I learned them I tried it to nose slide but i couldn’t get it.  Maybe I will learn someday.

Parlant de trick, j’ai jamais vu de simple non comply to nose slide, j’imagine que tu y arrive ?
C’est marrant car le premier jour où je l’ai appris j’ai essayé en nose slide et j’y arrivais pas. Peut être que je vais l’apprendre un jour.

You made an appearance in a music video, how did it come?
Greg Hunt asked me to do this thing and of course I said yes.  He got me out of work and paid me and everything. It was so sick.  He would pick me up real early in the morning with coffee and we’d roam around LA.  I grew up skating with my older brother a little and he taught me a lot of old school tricks so I knew how to do all that stuff.  I was just getting into watching old school videos and stuff and I was siked on it.  That was super fun.  Greg’s one of the raddest dudes.

Tu est apparu dans un clip musical, comment t’es tu retrouvé là ?
Greg Hunt m’a demandé d’y participer et j’ai bien sûr accepté  Il m’a amené là bas et payé. C’était vraiment cool. Il venait me chercher très tôt le matin avec un café et on tournait autour de LA. J’ai appris à skater avec mon grand frère et il m’avait appris beaucoup de tricks oldschool donc je savais déjà les faire. Je regardais beaucoup de vieilles vidéos à ce moment et j’adorais. C’était très marrant. Greg est un des mecs les plus cools.

 

 How have you been hooked up by Alien Workshop ?
Somehow I ended up becoming friends with Dyrdeks cousins when I was younger.  They lived 20 minutes from me and we started skating and filming all the time.  We made this homie video and somehow the team manager at Workshop saw it and told them he would send me boards.  Thats how it started.  I got put on Workshop and DC flow in the same weekend.  I couldn’t have been more excited.  I was on Workshop flow for a long time.  I got on es footwear and then Alien put me on right after.  

Comment as tu été accroché par Alien Workshop ?
J’avais fini par devenir ami avec les cousins de Rob Dyrdek quand j’étais jeune. Ils vivaient à 20 mn de chez moi et on a commencé à skater et filmer ensemble tout le temps. Nous avions fait cette vidéo de pote et le team manager l’a vu et leur a dit qu’il m’enverrait des boards. C’est comme ça que tout a commencé. Je suis rentré chez Alien et DC en flow la même semaine. Ça n’aurait pas pu être plus excitant. Je suis resté chez Alien en flow un long moment. Je suis rentré chez èS et Alien m’ont officiellement pris juste après ça. Ce devait arriver je pense.

 You had a sick part for Gravis last year, what was the trick that take the longest to land ?

You played basketball as a kid, do you still play basketball sometimes ? Lakers or Clippers ?
I can still shoot a basketball pretty good but I don’t play or follow it.  Me and Benny (Workshop filmer) have been talking about getting a game going.  It’d be fun but i feel like I’m  out of shape haha.

Tu jouais au basket quand t’étais gamin, t’arrive t il de jouer encore de temps en temps ?
J’ai encore un bon shoot mais je n’y joue pas et je ne suis pas trop ce qui se passe. Moi et Benny (un filmer pour Alien) avons envisagé d’aller jouer. Ce serait marrant mais j’ai l’impression que je n’ai plus la forme ahah

Coming from Ohio to LA, do you feel on a day to day that California is the heart of the skateboard industry ?
Yes.  It is for sure.  Skateboarding is a million times bigger in Cali than Ohio.  Every company is based in California for the most part and so are most of the Pros and Ams.

En venant de l’Ohio, ressent-on au quotidien que LA est le coeur de l’industrie du Skate ?
Oui, c’est le cas complètement.  Le skate est un million de fois plus grand en Californie que dans l’Ohio. Pratiquement toutes les marques sont basées en Californie comme presque tous les pros ou amateurs.

Who do you skate with when you’re not on trip ?
Lately,  I’ve been skating with the HUF dudes a lot.  I skate with AVE and Dill a lot too.

Avec qui skate-tu quand t’es pas en voyage ?
Dernièrement, je skate beaucoup avec les mecs de HUF. Je skate souvent avec Dill et AVE aussi.

What are your daily spots ?
Haha.  I wish I had one of those.  I go to Ave and Biebels park a lot.  Other than that.  I sit in my house a lot or in my car going to find new spots.

Quel est ton spot quotidien ?
Ahah, j’aimerais en avoir un. Je vais beaucoup au park privé de Biebel et AVE. Je reste beaucoup chez moi ou dans ma voiture pour trouver de nouveaux spots.

Have you got a good story about an Alien trip ?
Yeah.  I forgot exactly where we were but I wanna say somewhere like KEntucky or virginia in the summer time.  There was a crazy storm going on and it was pouring rain so gnarly so we couldn’t even drive. We ran into a gas station and got snacks and hung out until the rain mellowed out.  We counted to 10 and all ran out to get in the vans and i was first.  I run in front of a car and almost get hit and slip onto my side and slide like 10 feet through the gas station in front of everyone.  I was soaked but I made it to the van.  We start driving and we heard that there was a tornado that touched down the city over so Im pretty spooked.  All the sudden the weather gets real mellow and then the wind just gets all gnarly. Joe Brook starts freaking out because he thinks he sees a tornado forming so I start panicking and yelling and shit.  i thought we were gonna die but we made it out alive and we were fine.  Later ,Omar and all of us filmed a fake video of us getting hit by a tornado in the van and posted it on Twitter and shit.  The video looks real and people started freaking out.  We had our families and friends calling us and asking if we were okay. It was so fucked up and funny.

As-tu une bonne histoire d’un trip Alien ?
Oui. J’ai oublié où c’était exactement mais je dirais quelque part comme le Kentucky ou la Virginie en été. Une grosse tempête arrivait et il pleuvait tellement qu’on ne pouvait pas conduire. Nous avons couru à une station service et on a attendu là que la pluie baisse en intensité. On a compté jusqu’à 10 pour courir dans le van et j’étais le premier. J’ai couru devant une voiture et j’ai presque été renversé et j’ai glissé sur 3 mètres devant tout le monde. J’étais trempé mais j’avais réussi à atteindre le van. On a démarré et nous avons entendu qu’une tornade avait atteint la ville et j’étais effrayé. Le ciel devint soudainement sombre et la vent commençait à souffler très fort. Joe Brook commença à flipper car il croyait voir une tornade se former et j’ai commencé à panique et à crier. Je pensais que nous allions mourir mais on a survécu et tout allait bien. Plus tard, Omar et nous autres avons monté une fausse vidéo où l’on était atteint par une tornade dans le van, qu’on a posté sur Twitter. La vidéo semblait réaliste et les gens ont commencé à flipper. Nos familles et nos amis nous ont appelé pour nous demandé si nous allions bien. C’était incroyable et trop drôle.

Have you got the keys of the beeb’s park ? Do you see “skate legends” there as often as “media” show us ?
I wish I had a key. But those things are like gold.  YOu gotta pay big bucks for one haha.  I see a lot of gnarly dudes there and for the most part they’re all really fucking cool, especially Guy Mariano!

As-tu une clé du park de Biebel ? Vois tu autant de “Skate legend” qu’on peut le voir dans le média ?
J’aimerais en avoir une mais ça vaut de l’or. Tu dois payer le prix fort pour en avoir une ahah. Je vois beaucoup de tueurs et la plupart sont vraiment cools, particulièrement Guy Mariano !

What are your court time projects ?
Traveling a little bit and Filming for an Alien Workshop part.
