Aaron is a professional lurker and a bit of a lonely wolf perhaps it has something to do with his background from Oregon. Whenever he got some time off from work he loves to go on adventures heading out into the unknown either on his bike or on his skateboard. He is a explorer and loves the excitement of not knowing what hides behinds the next corner or on the next roof top. This excitement is his drive the search of the miraculous the journey of a unknown treasure.

Me and Aaron got a lot in common we are endless searchers and lurkers for a never ending undefinable goal the drive the lust of exploring the unknown. Is this it ? There must be something more then this.

For a “newcomer” interview, let’s start with the usual introcuction, where do you come from ?
I’m from Corvallis, Oregon. The Pacific Northwest.

Do you live in NYC right now ?
Yeah. About three years now.

When you were in Oregon, were locals still speaking about Matt Beach or Jayme Fortune ?
For sure, all the time. I asked for Jayme’s autograph once when I was like 13 at a skatepark.

How was the scene in Corvallis ?
Not much of one really. Shitty skatepark that I’ve grown to enjoy and appreciate, most of the homies that still skate moved to Portland to keep it alive. Corvallis is a small college town so people think skating is whack.

Do you think people in New York or SF have a different point of view about skating comparing to people in Corvallis ?
I think so. Both places have their share of people who hate skating and think its a nuisance but skating in project buildings and sketchier neighborhoods out east people tend to be psyched on skating.

Could you move to LA ? Would you enjoy it ?
I honestly haven’t been to LA to skate for a long time, now that I’m older I think I would have more fun and enjoy it maybe. Cars and traffic suck though.

How have you met Pontus ? Have you ever seen him before the recent Polar trip in NY ?
I met Pontus when him and the Polar dudes came out to NY this summer. I hadn’t met Pontus previously. I used to watch the Mad Circle video a lot, and Strongest of the Strange was sick.

As a former Oregon residant, what drove you to SF (then to NY) ?
I lived 1.5 hours south of it, I’d go up there to skate pretty frequently growing up though. I moved to SF because I wanted to move to LA, but SF skating looked more fun and relative to me at the time and not owning a car the move seemed more practical. My friend Waylon and I came to NY one summer to skate and had a blast, then came back the following summer. I rolled my ankle the first night skating and I’ve been here ever since.. Kinda craze actually ha

What made you decide to stay in NY ?
I hurt myself the first evening skating and then chilled and partied for a month and didn’t skate much and felt like I blew it for skating since I had came to skate, so I missed my flight and have been here, skating and working ever since. Just trying to film, skate and have fun.

Commençons par la question classique d’intro, d’où viens tu ?
Je suis de Corvallis, Oregon, Nord west sur la côte pacifique.

Tu vis à New York maintenant ?
Oui depuis 3 ans maintenant

Quand tu était encore dans l’Oregon, tu entendais parler de Jayme Fortune ou Matt Beach ?
Oui à fond, tout le temps, une fois j’ai demandé un autographe à Jayme Fortune quand j’avais genre 13 ans à un skatepark

Comment était la scène à Corvallis ?
Y avait pas vraiment de scène en fait, un petit skatepark pourri sur lequel j’ai grandi et que j’ai apprécié, la plupart des gens qui skate toujours ont bougé à Portland. Corvallis est une petit ville universitaire donc les gens là-bas pensent que le skate, c’est de la branlette

Penses tu que les gens à SF ou NY ont un point de vue différent sur le skate qu’à Corvallis ?
Oui je pense. Chaque endroit a son lot de personnes qui détestent le skate et pensent que c’est une nuisance. Mais quand tu skate dans des quartiers un peu sketchy de l’Est y a des gens qui apprécient le skate.

Pourrais tu aller à Los Angeles ? Ca te plairait ?
Ca fait un baille que je ne suis pas allé skater à LA. Maintenant que je suis plus vieux, je pourrais peut-être plus apprécier et m’amuser. Par contre, les voitures et le traffic, ça craint.

Comment as-tu rencontré Pontus ? Tu l’avais déjà vu avais le trip polar à NY cet été ?
Je l’ai rencontré quand lui et les gars de Polar se sont amenés à NY cet été, je ne l’avais jamais vu auparavant. Je regardais beaucoup les vidéos Mad Circle, Strongest of the Strange était vraiment bien aussi.

En tant qu’ancien résidant de l’Oregon, qu’est ce qui t’a amené à San Fransisco puis NY ?
En fait j’habitais à une heure et demi au sud de Portland, bien que j’y allais très souvent pour skater depuis longtemps. En fait je suis allé à SF car je voulais aller à LA, mais à ce moment là, skater à SF me paraissait plus amusant et ça me paraissait plus familier, et bouger sans avoir de voiture semblait plus pratique. Moi et mon pote Waylon sommes allés un été à NY pour skater et ça a été le choc, on est donc revenu l’été suivant. Je me suis tordu la cheville la première nuit de skate et je suis toujours là-bas depuis. C’est un peu dingue en fait ! 

Qu’est ce qui t’a décidé à rester à NY ?
Je me suis blessé le premier soir et j’ai chillé et fait la fête pendant un mois, pas beaucoup skaté, j’ai pensé que c’était tu gâchis car j’étais venu pour skater. J’ai donc raté mon avion et je suis toujours là, à skater et travailler. Juste travailler, skater et m’amuser.

How can you compare the different scenes from places you’ve visited ?
I’d say they’re all pretty similar. NY is huge and has a lot more skaters so there are a lot more cliques and crew of kids from different states and boros who all skate together. SF is pretty small and has a lot of skaters too so the sessions can be pretty big sometimes.

Your parts are filled with bunch of different spots and particular trick selection. Is it the way you skate daily or do you spent all the time in a training facility…  ?
Ha definitely the way I skate every day.. My trick selection isn’t always too diverse so I like to find spots that I can do the tricks I really like and have fun with on spots I think are cool.

Did you get a proper “DIY training” to get officially part of Polar ?
I haven’t yet ha, I’d be down though. Hopefully when I go visit them in Malmo..?

I know you’re really focused on filmnig something now, what’s it for ?
Static 4 and a new J. Elkin video. Shit’ll be dope.

Have you been heard that you have to give to Pontus a couple a scooter scalps per year, if you want to keep in the Polar team  ? Are you ready for that ?
Shit I’m down to trade a kid a board for a scooter anyway.. Ha

Can you teach us how to make a proper impossible ?
To do a proper impossible? Mine suck. I gave up on that trick cause everyone else does them better ha

Hmmm, I guess you call that a 360 pop shuv, cause you’ve got a couple on film that look pretty solid !
Yeah definitely more of a three shove. Mine lack the foot wrap ha

How do you usually spend your time when you’re not skating ?
Sitting on my couch, generally getting stoned watching TV or I’m out biking around for work (Aaron delivers food for a vegan cafe).

Can you provide some advice to all the skaters who want to visit NY ?
Skate and have fun, the bars stay open late.

Comment comparerais tu les différents scènes des villes que tu as visitées ?
Je dirais que c’est à peu près la même chose. NY est immense, il y a donc beaucoup plus de skaters avec des crew  différents quartiers ou états qui skatent tous ensemble. SF est assez petit mais il y a beaucoup de skaters aussi, les sessions peuvent parfois réunir beaucoup de monde.

Tes parts sont remplies de spots très différents avec une sélection de tricks assez pointue, c’est comme ça que tu skate habituellement ou tu t’entraînes secrètement dans un skatepark privé ?
Haha je skate carrément comme ça tout le temps. Mes tricks ne sont pas forcément très diversifiées donc j’aime bien trouver des spots où je pourrais faire les tricks que j’aime, et m’amuser sur un spot que je trouve cool.

Est ce que tu as déjà eu un stage de DIY avec Pontus ?
Ahah pas encore, mais je suis partant ! Peut-être quand j’irai à Malmö, espérons !

Tu es très occupé à filmer en ce moment, c’est pour quoi ?
Static 4 et la nouvelle video de J.Elkin, ça va tuer !

On t’a dit qu’il fallait ramener quelques scalp de trottinettes à Pontus pour pouvoir rester dans le team Polar ?  T’es prêt ?
Ah merde, je suis prêt à échanger à un gamin une board contre un trottinette de toute façon !

Comment fait-on un bon impossible ?
Les miens sont nuls. J’ai laissé tomber depuis que tout le monde le fait mieux que moi !

Je pense que tu appelle ça un pop shuv 360, tu en as des très bons des tes parts !
Oui c’est définitivement plus un pop chuv 360. Les miens manquent d’enroulement du pieds !

Tu fait quoi en général quand tu ne skate pas ?
Je reste sur mon canapé, en général un peu défoncé à regarder la télé. Ou bien je suis dehors sur mon vélo pour mon travail (Aaron est livreur pour un resto végétarien).

Quel conseil donnerais tu pour quelqu’un qui vient à NY pour skater ?
Skate et amuses toi, les bars restent ouverts tard.

Where do you live in NY ? Does Pay rent remains a challenge ?
I live on Greene Ave. in Bedstuy, in Brooklyn. My rent is only $525 and I work 3/4 days a week so it’s not too bad at all really..

Let’s talk about the NY scene, it seems like it’s a lot covered nowadays, who do you see the most there ?
I see a lot of people skating around all the time, I saw Rodney Smith carving down Prince st. in SoHo on an old school
shape the other day and that was super sick. I see Steve R. mashing around a lot..

Have you ever seen Gino once ?
Yeah like once I think. I think I saw him at the pretty sweet premier.

In the eyes of a “young” NY local, who’s the king of NY today ?
I’m not sure who I’d say is the king. A lot of people have been killing it for a long time. Zered’s been killing it a lot lately

What’s the craziest thing on a skateboard have you seen there ?
This homie ghost surfed a Fs board on the Union Sq. rail on a packed day thru the knobs. That’s probably my favorite thing I’ve seen here

What do you think about the european skate scene ?
I think it’s dope. A lot of dope skaters and skater owned companies and magazines, and of course amazing looking spots.

Tu habites où à NY ? Payer le loyer reste-il un défi ?

J’habite sur Green Avenue, BedStuy (Bedford Stuvesant est un partie du quartier de Brooklyn) à Brooklyn, le loyer est de seulement 525 dollars, je travaille 3 à 4 jours par semaine, c’est pas si difficile en fait.

Parlons de la scène newyorkaise, il semble qu’on en voit beaucoup en ce moment, qui vois-tu le plus souvent ?
Je vois pleins de gens skater tout le temps, j’ai vu Rodney Smith carver dans Prince St. à Soho sur une board avec un vieux shape et ça tuait. Je vois souvent Steve Rodriguez passez dans le coin aussi.

Pour toi qui est un jeune local de NY, qui est le “roi” de NY aujourd’hui ?
Je ne suis pas vraiment certain de pouvoir dire qui est le roi. Y a plein de gens qui défoncent depuis un moment. Récemment, Zerred déchire !

Qu’est ce que t’as vu de plus fou sur un skate depuis que tu es là ?
Un pote a fait front board sur le rail d’Union Square, un jour de pointe et avec les antiskate, c’est la truc préféré que j’ai vu içi !

Tu a déjà vu Gino içi ?
Ah oui je l’ai déjà vu une fois, ça devait être à l’avant première de Pretty Sweet

Que pense tu de la scène européenne ?
Je pense que c’est super bon. Des bons skaters, des marques gérées par des skaters et bien sûr des très beaux spots !
