It seems you have grown up in the hippie culture, could you tell us what it looked like and what have you learned from it?
I think that my family and community have taught me many things, some of the important things that come to mind that may be considered “hippyish” would be my connection to the natural world and love of the outdoors. Individuality has always been a theme throughout my life and I think that came from my surroundings as a child.
I think I also learned that it takes more than kindness, positive vibrations and nag champa to accomplish what you want in life although all those things are important too.
I don’t consider myself a hippy and I believe what was once described as a hippy no longer exist. It was a movement about progress and change and challenging expectations. Once it became a part of pop culture everything useful and with meaning was killed by stereotype.

Il semblerait que tu ais grandi au sein de la culture Hippie, peut tu nous dire à quoi cela ressemble et ce que tu en a appris ?
Je pense que ma famille et ma communauté m’ont appris beaucoup de choses, les choses les plus importantes qui me viennent à l’esprit qui peuvent être considérées « hippie » seraient ma connexion avec le nature et l’amour du plein air. L’individu a été un thème important tout au long de ma vie et je pense que cela vient de mon entourage lorsque j’étais enfant.
Néanmoins réussir  ta vie demande plus que de la gentillesse, des vibrations positive and du nag champa même si ces choses sont importantes aussi.
Je ne me considère pas comme hippie and je pense que ce qui a été décrit comme Hippie dans la passé n’existe plus. C’était un mouvement basé sur le progrès et le changement and avec de grandes attentes. Dès que ça a été intégré à la culture pop, l’utilité et le sens ont été tués par les stéréotypes.

 

Maybe it’s linked to your childhood, and according to some trip you make with your friends, you seem to keep close to the nature. Is that important for you?
I love the outdoors and nature so when I can combine that with my love of skateboarding I know it’s gonna be some incredible times.

Peut-être que c’est lié à ton enfance, d’après les trips que tu fais avec tes potes, on dirait que tu restes proche de la nature. C’est important pour toi ?
J’adore le plein air et la nature, donc quand tu peux allier ça avec ma passion pour le skate, je sais que ça va être des moments incroyables.

 

What are your main interests beside family and skateboarding?
I spend my non skate and family time mostly fishing, hiking and camping but I am interested in anything that is interesting.

A quoi t’intéresses tu en dehors de la famille et du skate ?
En dehors du skate et de la famille, je passe la plupart de mon temps à pêcher, faire de la randonnée et camper mais je m’intéresse à beaucoup de choses.

 

Back in the Powell days, were you thinking about a pro career that you finally embraced?
I didn’t really know what it meant to have a pro career and Powell never paid me so I didn’t think I could survive off skateboarding alone, at the time I always had other jobs.
It wasn’t until I hooked up with habitat and started to travel and get a little paycheck that I realized what professional skateboarding really was.

Quand tu ridais pour Powell à l’époque, pensais a une carrière pro, que finalement tu mènes ?
Je ne savais pas vraiment ce que signifiait avoir une carrière et Powell ne m’a jamais payé donc je ne pensais pas que je pourrais vivre du skate uniquement, j’avais toujours eu un autre travail à côté.
J’ai réalisé ce qu’était vraiment le skate pro quand je suis rentré chez Habitat et commencé à voyager et recevoir quelques chèques.

 

You’re an all-around skateboarder, you skate transitions, concrete parks and you also have technical abilities to skate tech ledges or rails. What would be the perfect terrain for you?
I go through phases on what kind of terrain I like to skate. For a while I was really into finding tall mellow long rails to skate, I really like wallrides a lot and lately I have been super into learning ledge tricks. So I think right now my ideal skate spot would have 13 inch ledges, good flat ground and a long wallride.

Tu skate de tout, courbes, Park en béton et tu montres de capacités à faire des trick tech sur des ledges ou des handrails. Quel est le terrain parfait pour toi ?
J’ai des phases pour le choix du type de spot que j’aime skater. J’ai été un moment tourné vers les longs rails, j’adore les wallrides et dernièrement je suis à fond pour apprendre des tricks de ledge. Donc, là maintenant mon spot idéal serait un ledge de 13 pouces, un bon flat et un grand wallride.

 

You raise a family, and at the same time you spend much time filming and traveling, how do you organize your life between your father responsibilities and your pro skateboarder duty?
When I am home I try and focus my time on my family, I skate with my buddies a lot at our park at night after I put the kids down and go on the occasional street filming missions and when I am on a trip I just try and make the most of it. Skate as much as I can, film as much as I can and that helps buy me the freedom to chill with the fam while I am home.

Tu élèves tes enfants, et en même temps tu passes beaucoup de temps à filmer et voyager, comment t’organises tu entre des responsabilités familiales et des obligations de pro skater ?
Quand je suis à la maison, j’essaie de me concentrer sur la famille, je skate beaucoup au park  avec mes potes la nuit, une fois que les enfants sont couchés et occasionnellement je pars en mission filming. Quand je suis en voyage j’en fais le plus possible. Je skate à fond, je film à bloc et ça me donne du temps libre à passer avec la famille quand je suis à la maison.

 

Your training facility has been mainly paid by your Sponsors and David Gravette sponsors. How has been the process to make it come true? Did you asked it to them?
My park is partially paid for by my sponsors and since Krux is part of NHS creature kicks on a little bit too, there are a small number of key holders that help out a little as well but a big portion comes out of my pocket. I have hosted a few local trade shoes and I try and rent it out for events when there is an opportunity just to save me a big of money.
Getting the park going was all my idea and something I feel like I need to stay healthy keep learning new tricks and stay sane in the wet months.   It has been really good for me now that I have a family because I can spend day time with family and doing non skate activities and still skate regularly at night.

Ton skatepark a été en partie payé par tes sponsors et ceux de David Gravette. Comment s’est passé l’ouverture de celui-ci ? Tu leur a demandé ?
Mon park a été partiellement payé par mes sponsors, et depuis que Krux fait partie de NHS, Creature en a payé une petite partie, il y a quelques personnes qui ont la clé qui aident un peu aussi mais la majeure partie vient de ma poche. J’ai organisé quelques foires à la chaussure locales et je le loue pour des événements quand il y a une opportunité afin d’économiser de l’argent.
Le park était mon idée car je pensais que je devais rester en forme, apprendre de nouveaux tricks pendant les mois pluvieux. C’est vraiment bien pour moi maintenant que j’ai des enfants car je peux passer du temps avec eux et avec des activités en dehors du skate tout en skatant pendant la nuit.

 

There are many good skateboarders coming from Oregon, such as Sebo Walker, Aaron Herrington, Matt Beach, the list goes on. Who would you invite for a perfect private session in your TF?
My dream Oregonian session would be a handful of my homies along with pros like Mike Chin, Matt Beach, Brent Atchley, John Rattray and Josh Mathews

Beaucoup de bons skaters viennt de l’Oregon, comme Sebo Walker, Aaron Herrington, la liste est longue. Qui inviterais-tu pour une session privée parfaite ?
Ma session rêvée seraient une poignée de potes avec des pros comme Mike Chin, Matt Beach, Brent Atchley, John Rattray et Josh Mathews.

 

You’re not too old and our not too young anymore. Do you consider that your age has already affected the way you skate or the way you approach trick attempts now?
I feel like at this age I fully know my body and my capabilities. I am secure with the way I skate and don’t feel like I need to prove myself anymore.
I feel healthier than ever before and I am having the most fun I’ve had since I was a teenager. Skating is so awesome right now and I am so thankful that I can still be doing it at this level.

Tu n’es pas vieux mais pas tout jeune non plus.  Penses-tu que ton âge a influence ta façon de skater ?
J’ai l’impression qu’à mon âge, je connais bien mon corps et mes capacités. Je suis à l’aise avec la façon dont je skate et je ne ressens pas le besoin de me prouver encore quoique ce soit.
Je me sens mieux physiquement comme jamais et je m’amuse plus que j’ai pu m’amuser étant ado. Skater est tellement génial maintenant et je suis tellement reconnaissant de toujours pouvoir le faire à ce niveau.

 

John Rattray moved to Portland, do you spend much time with him?

We skate together when we can, mostly at skateparks. He also has a little boy so we also get to do family stuff too which is very awesome.

John Rattray vit maintenant à Portland, tu passes beaucoup de temps avec lui ?
On skate ensemble quand on peut, le plus souvent aux skateparks. Il a un petit garçon aussi, donc on peut faire des activités familiales ce qui est génial.

 

Habitat got a new home with Tum Yeto, are you relieved about that? How the survival of habitat has been important for you?
It’s really awesome that Habitat ended up with a new distributer and made it through almost death. Tum yeto is great and toy machine was always one if my favorite brands, I grew up on welcome to hell, so I am siked we are with them.
Habitat has been my home forever and has really become part of who I am.  Joe Castrucci is the best!

Habitat a trouvé nouveau domicile chez Tum Yeto, es-tu soulagé ? Comment la survie d’habitat a été importante pour toi ?
C’est génial qu’Habitat ait fini par trouver un nouveau distributeur et se relève après avoir été proche de la fin. Tum Yeto est cool et Toy Machine a toujours été une de mes marques favorites.  J’ai grandi avec Welcome to Hell, donc je suis ravi que nous soyons avec eux.
Habitat a toujours été ma maison et est devenu une partie de ce que je suis. Joe Castrucci, c’est est le meilleur !

 

How did you stay informed about the AWS/Habitat situation? Did you talk a lot about it with the other team members?
The team manager of Habitat lives in Portland and is a close friend of mine so he kept me posted the whole time, I spoke with Joe regularly throughout the whole ordeal but he had his hands full so I tried not to bother him too much. I also spoke with a few if the other dudes to see how they were feeling; I think we all were on the same page throughout it all.

Comment es-tu resté informé de la situation d’AW/Habitat ? Vous en parliez entre riders du team ?
Le team manager vit à Portland et est un de mes amis proche donc il me tenait au courant tout le temps, j’ai parlé avec Joe régulièrement tout le long de l’affaire mais il était tout le temps occupé donc je ne voulais pas trop le déranger. J’ai aussi parlé avec pas mal des riders pour voir ce qu’ils ressentaient, je pense qu’on était tous sur la même longueur d’onde.

 

Is there a new video project in the process since Habitat goes on?
Habitat put together a pretty awesome video called “moving right along” that announced our new home at Tum Yeto and although it was not a skate centered video it was pretty epic. Aside from that I think that they are just gonna focus on getting back on their feet. “Search the horizon” came out less than a year ago so if we were to do a video it would be down the road a bit.

 

Depuis qu’habitat continue, vous êtes sur un nouveau projet de video ?
Habitat vient de sortie un clip appelé « Moving right along » qui annonce l’arrivée chez Tum Yeto et bien qu’il n’y ait pas de skate, c’est vraiment bien. A part ça, je pense qu’ils vont juste se concentrer sur le rétablissement de la marque. « Search the Horizon » est sortie il y a moins d’un an donc si on faisait une nouvelle vidéo, ce serait pour plus tard.

 

What do you think about the whole street league show (or that kind of skateboarding covereage)? Have you ever been invited to enter it ?
Street league is crazy. Those guys are so good and so consistent it’s mind blowing. They are in a league of their own.   I got an invite to try out this year but didn’t attend the open contest. I don’t think I could stand up next to those dudes, and I prefer to use my time away from home going to cool places and filming street skating instead of in an arena feeling inadequate.

Que penses-tu de la Streetleague ? As-tu été invité à y participer ?
La StreetLeague, c’est fou. C’est hallucinant à quel point ces gars sont si forts et consistants. Ils sont dans une catégorie à part. J’ai eu une invitation pour participer cette année mais je n’y suis pas allé. Je ne pense pas avoir ma place à côté de ces gars, et je préfère utiliser le temps loin de chez moi pour aller dans des endroits cools et filmer du street plutôt que dans une arène où je ne me sens pas à l’aise.

 

What would you do after you skater pro life?
I’ve had a lot of different dreams about life after professional skateboarding and they all seem to revolve around rural life, agricultural and hospitality based, some sort of guide service or adventure tourism maybe a bed and breakfast maybe a farm. Haven’t narrowed it down yet and thankfully I won’t need to at this moment. I wanna have fun, I wanna see beautiful places, I wanna make people stoked and I wanna give my family an interesting life.

Que ferais tu après ta carrière pro ?
J’ai rêvé  beaucoup de choses pour après le skate pro et ça a l’air de tourner autour de la vie rurale, l’agriculture ou une activité basée sur l’hospitalité, une sorte de guide de tourisme d’aventure, peut être un bed & breackfast, peut être une ferme.
Je ne me suis pas encore restreint dans mes choix, et j’espère que je n’aurai pas besoin  le moment venu. J’ai envie de m’amuser, de voir des endroits magnifiques, et je veux offrir à ma famille une vie intéressante.
