Do you remember the first time you skated Brooklyn Banks back in the days?
Yes, when I was 8. With my brother. My mom drove a big station wagon.. And I remember we brought a launch ramp..We started a big launch session at the banks..there’s pictures somewhere just have to find them.

Te rappelles tu la première fois que tu as skaté Brooklyn Banks  ?
Oui, j’avais 8 ans, avec mon frère. Ma mère conduisait un gros break… Je me souviens qu’on avait acheté un gros banks et on a commencé à faire une session dessus à Brooklyn Banks. Y a des photos quelques part, faudrait juste que je les trouve.

What were the “go to go” tricks at this time there?
Watching people Ollie the nine steps at the Brooklyn banks in 1989, I just remember they the fucking biggest thing ever..    Bomb drop rail slide down them was fucking crazy! Only one of our friends who was older 15 skated on rails and Ollies the  wall everytime. Even Ollie over the wall was huge at that time.. 8 years old, we just skated.

C’était quoi “LE trick chaud” à ce moment là ?
On regardait les mecs sauter les 8 marches en 89, de souvenir c’était le truc le plus gros jamais fait… Bomb drop rail slide sur le rail était dingue ! Y avait un seul de nos amis plus vieux, 15 ans, qui skatait le rail et sautait le mur à tout les coups. Sauter le mur, à l’époque, c’était énorme… 8 ans, on faisait du skate quoi…

 Did you realize that you’re part of the guys who made east coast an inspiration ?
Not really.. Didn’t have a clue. We did look up to the older heads.. When they came everybody sat down and watched..  Jeremy Henderson, Brian Blake, Felix Arguelles, Sean Sheffey, “Dune” Chris Pastras and Barker Barett .. We looked up to the  Shut team.. Those guys had the most style in the city

Tu réalisais que tu faisais partie des personnes qui ont fait du côté East Coast une inspiration ?
Pas vraiment. J’avais pas idée. On regardait les anciens. Quand ils venaient, tout le monde s’asseyait et regardait. Jeremy Handerson, Brian Blake, Felix Arguelles, Sean Sheffey, “Dune” Chris Pastras et Barker Barett. On regardait le team Shut. Ces gars avaient le meilleur style de la ville.

 You and your brother Mike went to California pretty early. It was the time you’ve been hooked up by Real  Skateboards. How was this era ? What was the story of a young skater from NJ hitting California for skating ?
It was fresh n new. Skating was on fire in SF. We went to visit our friend Matt Field. He had Miles Davis album Rebirth of cool. His girlfriend who is his wife now was pregnant about to have his first baby.. They lived by the beach on Balboa.. Embracing the California sun and the hills.. We also met up with Teddy Powell who was living there at the time skating for Stereo. We also got to see our friend who everybody knows as Bigfoot.. We stayed by the fisherman a wharf.. We met up with and skated with Tommy G and Jim Thiebaud at Wallenberg.. Matt told me to turn it on and I skated as hard as I could.. 5-0 Grinds to kick flip out… Having a good time with friends and enjoying the smooth grounds, compared to back in jersey.

Toi et ton frère êtes partis en Californie très tôt. Tu es rentré chez Real Skateboards. Comment as tu vécu cette période en tant que jeune skater du New Jersey arrivant en Californie pour skater ?
C’était frais et tout nouveau. C’était à bloc de skate à SF. Nous sommes venu rendre visite à notre ami Matt Field. Il avait l’album Rebirth of cool de Miles Davis. Sa copine, qui est maintenant sa femme, était enceinte et sur le point de donner naissance à leur bébé. Ils vivaient vers la plage de Balboa, profitant du soleil californien et des collines. Nous avions rencontré également Teddy Powell qui vivait aussi là et skatait pour Stereo. On a vu aussi notre ami que tout le monde appelle Bigfoot. On habitait près du quai vers les pêcheurs… Nous avons rencontré et skaté avec Tommy Guererro et Jim Thiebaud à Wallenberg… Matt m’a dit de skater à fond et aussi dur que je le pouvais. Je faisait des 5-0 flip out… On prenait du bon temps avec les amis et profitaient du sol lisse comparé au New Jersey.

Do you still hang out with Paulo Diaz sometimes for skating or play music ? When was the last time you’ve seen him ?
7 years ago. We were in Spain together  visited the Klarwein family, Abdul Mati Klarwein. Yea the most surreal experience.  Yea Paulo is still my hero, huge inspiration. Through art, music, and life.. His birthday is among the heavy weights.. Mohammad Ali and Benjamin Franklin.. That’s heavy!

Vois tu encore Paulo Diaz pour skater ou faire de la musique ? A quand remonte la dernière rencontre ?
Il y a 7 ans. Nous sommes allés ensemble en Espagne rencontrer la famille d’ Abdul Mati Klarwein. C’était une expérience surréelle. Paulo est toujours mon héro, une grande inspiration, à travers l’art la musique ou la vie… Son jour d’anniversaire est le même que certains des plus grands, Mohammed Ali et Benjamin Franklin, du lourd !

What are the strongest memories of your carrer? The good and the bad ones ?  
What’s the carrer mean? The good the bad “Lo bien Lo Mal”  do you remember ? That song from back in the day by the Guru RIP and mc Solaar. In 1993 broke it down for us children in the streets growing up with hip hop as a culture..
Music as a culture and community was what it was not not like how it is now..
Skate shops like Kanek skate shop in Newark New Jersey aka Brick City. Kanek play a big role with hosting open mic, underground hip hop events as a culture and community efforts.
There’s too much going on today. Media is being used as a tool to confuse. Our brothers and sisters of today. Skateboarding can also get carried away. If you look.. For me music and skating is a weapon to create and drop knowledge

Quels sont les souvenirs les plus forts de ta carrière ? Bons ou mauvais.
Qu’est ce que carrière signifie ? “The good the bad” “Lo bien Lo Mal” (référence à “Le bien Le mal” de Guru/MC Solaar) tu te souviens ? Le titre d’époque de Guru (RIP)/MC Solaar. En 93 on était des enfants grandissant dans la rue avec le hip hop comme culture. La musique comme culture était ce qu’elle était, pas comme maintenant.
Des shop comme Kanek skate shop à Newark (“Brick City) jouent un rôle important pour la scène locale en organisant des scènes ouvertes hip hop underground. Ça bouge beaucoup trop aujourd’hui. Les médias sont utilisés comme un outil qui prête à confusion. Nos frères et nos sœurs d’aujourd’hui. Le skate peut aussi se laisser emporter. Si tu regarde bien, pour moi la musique et le skate sont une arme pour la création.

If you had to choose your favorite session ever, which one and why it was the best ?
A session for me is everyday.. If I’m not teaching someone I’m learning.  constant elevation

Si tu devais choisir ta seesion favorite, laquelle et pourquoi ?
Une session pour moi c’est tous les jours… Je ne suis pas en train d’apprendre à quelqu’un, j’apprend des autres, en constante élévation.

It seems that filming for EE or Real was more spontaneous and naturally. Recently, some companies try to show a original street skating again (I mean filming the street random spots, pushing…), what do you think about that ?
Polar got dope shit. Josh Stuart is the man. It comes down to the Filmer and editor. Someone like Josh knows his equipment and has the eye to make it classic. There’s alot good filmers out there doing amazing work. Vern, Anthony Claravel, Jeremy from Montreal, Mandible Claw, and many others

Il semble que filmer pour Real ou Easterne Exposure à l’époque semblait plus spontané et naturel. Récemment, certaines marques montrent du skate de manière plus authentique à nouveau, comment tu vois ça ?
Polar font des bons trucs. Cela revient au filmeur et au montage. Quelqu’un comme Josh Stewart maîtrise son équipement et a l’oeil pour avoir un résultat stylé. Il y a de nombreux bons filmeurs qui font du super travail. Vern, Anthony Claravel, Jeremy from Montreal, Mandible Claw, et beaucoup d’autres.

You recently made an apparence in the last Magenta clip “Panic in Gotham”, How did you meet the crew ?
Did I? That’s amazing man!! Something about filming I really enjoy the experience and moments more..I’ve always been more satisfied with Skating and filming with friends than the final product..ill watch my parts a year it comes out.

Tu apparais récemment dans la dernière production de Magenta “Panic in Gotham”, comment as tu rencontré la bande ?
Ha bon ? C’est génial mec !! Ce que j’apprécie à propos de filmer c’est avant tout vivre le moment. Je suis toujours plus satisfait de skater et filmer avec mes amis que le résultat final. Je regarde mes parts durant l’année où elle sortent.

How did you decide to open Knotty Roots ? How is it going now ?
It’s going well. There apart of a 15 state expo www.naturalhaircareexpo.com
I wish the best for that. I’m more focused on getting some new projects started. I’ve been art director / Set Decorator for 2 years now. Finished my first feature film in November, “something whispered” produced by Cuba Gooding Jr. Worked with the History Channel, a few music videos, Nickelodeon toons, etc..

Comment as tu décidé d’ouvrir Knotty Roots ? Comment ça se passe aujourd’hui ?
Ca se passse bien. On participe à une expo dans 15 états : www.naturalhaircareexpo.com. Je leur souhaite le meilleur. Je suis plus concentré sur de nouveaux projets que j’ai entrepris. Je suis Directeur artistique/Décorateur de plateau depuis deux ans. J’ai fini ma première collaboration pour un film en novembre dernier “Something whispered” produit pas Cuba Gooding Jr.. J’ai travaillé pour History Channel, quelques clips vidéo, la chaîne de cartoon Nickelodeon, etc…

“Finished my first feature film in November, “something whispered” produced by Cuba Gooding Jr” : What consist of your job exactly ?
I worked as a set dresser/set decorator . Something totally outside if skateboarding. One way or another everything helps to balance my lifestyle, and support my family.

En quoi consistait ton travail pour le film ?
Je travaillais en tant qu’ “ensemblier” (décorateur de plateau). Ça n’a rien à voir avec le skate. D’une façon ou d’une autre, ça peut équilibrer mon style de vie et aider ma famille.

You’re also involved in music making, where do you get your inspiration ?
The records, Teddy Becks, The Delphonics, The Whatnauts, Mind body and Soul. Music is Universoul.

Tu fait également de la musique, d’où tire tu tes inspirations ?

You filmed for Static 4, are you working on another videos  part?
It’s coming along. We have a few more things to film.. It’s going be nice

Tu as filmer pour la prochaine “Static 4”, travailles tu sur d’autres part ?
Ca va venir. On a encore quelque trucs à filmer. Ca va être bien.

How is it being a father and a professional skateboarder ?
It’s a responsibility, its a joy, its means he world to me.

Comment c’est d’être père de famille et skateur pro ?
C’est une responsabilité, une joie, et il est tout pour moi.

Which skateboarders inspire you nowadays ?
I like working with the young heads. Ramel, Bjorne, Jacob, And young heads who don’t have much but a love to skate.. I’m not really concerned with what names are out there. If your cool people then ill skate with you.

Quels skateurs t’inspire aujourd’hui ?
J’aime bien skater avec les jeunes. Ramel, Bjorne, Jacob et les jeunes qui n’ont pas grand chose à part leur passion pour le skate. Je ne m’intéresse pas vraiment à ceux dont on entend parler autour. Si t’es cool alors j’irai skater avec toi !

Your teammates at Organika are all in California. Do you see them often ?
I follow them on Instagram lol not as much because Ive been busy here skating all year around making things happen and supporting my family. Helping my mom out.

Les autre riders Organika sont tous en Californie. Tu les vois souvent ?
Je les suis sur Instagram lol. Non je ne les vois pas souvent,  je skate la plupart du temps içi toute l’année et je m’occupe de ma famille et j’aide ma mère.

Any last words you want to give us ?
Today’s recipe I cooked seafood bouillabaisse. Se La Bom ! Keep Painting your dreams, Living your Prayers, and Enjoy one day at a time.  Be on the Look out for a Quim Cardona music full length album along with my skating in the near future… Thank you so much for this opportunity.
