Yaje, originated from Brazil, once couldn’t go unnoticed in New York and even beyond. It was back in 2010/2101 and some would be quick to call him the prodigal son, at least I was.
Some knee injuries took him for a long break back to Brazil, far away from skateboarding, but closer to his quite unconventional roots. A break that looked like a spiritual retreat more than a Christmas break.
2016 is the year of his coming back, with thousands of projects and a new board sponsor whose intro video showed him being hit by a car… or not.
Recently in France, we got ahold of him and asked him a couple of questions even if we really only had one killing us …WTF with the avocado craze?

D’origine brésilienne, Yaje a été l’un des jeunes les plus en vue, à NY et plus loin. C’était aux alentours de 2010/2011 et il a rapidement hérité du surnom d’ « Enfant prodige », içi en tout cas.
Des blessures aux genoux l’ont conduit à faire une longue parenthèse au Brésil, loin du skate, découvrir ses racines pas forcement conventionnelles, qui semble plus tenir du voyage initiatique que de vacances en famille.
2016 marque son vrai retour, une multitude de projets et un nouveau sponsor board dont la vidéo d’introduction le montrait passer sous une voiture, ou presque.
Passé récemment en France, nous l’avons attrapé pour quelques questions dont l’une concerne forcément son amour pour les avocats.

What’s your relationship with Brazil for people who don’t know you ?
Brazil means a lot to me, because it was a time of maturation, it was a time of growth, it was a time of getting back to my roots, returning to where I came from, to my language, to where I had my earliest memories. Coming back to my spirituality somehow, I was born to a lot of – I wouldn’t say religion – but culture that I was learning about. Spending time with my family, my grandma who’s now passed. All of this was very good for my spirit, my soul, more than just temporary fulfillment. For the first time of my life I was kind of torn between who I thought I was and who I really am.

Quel rapport as-tu avec le Brésil ?
Le Brésil est très important pour moi, car mon retour était une période de maturation, d’éveil, de retour aux sources, là d’où je viens, ma langue et où j’ai mes premiers souvenirs. D’une certaine manière, ce fut aussi un retour à ma spiritualité. Je suis né sous une grande influence de ma culture, sans parler de religion, que j’ai apprise. J’ai passé du temps avec ma famille, ma grand-mère en particulier, qui est décédée depuis. Tout ceci a été très bénéfique pour mon esprit, mon âme, plus que juste un accomplissement éphémère. Pour la première fois de ma vie, j’étais déchiré entre qui je suis et qui je pensais être.

So going back to Brazil was a new awakening?
Yes, very much so.

Donc retourner au Brésil représente une nouvelle naissance?
Oui, c’est ça.

You grew up in Brazil?
Only for the first three years then we moved to NYC

Tu as grandi au Brésil ?
Seulement pendant mes trois premières années, ensuite je suis venu à NYC

Can you tell us about the meaning of your name?
My name is a sacred tea brew from the Amazonia called Ayahuasca. I didn’t really understand what it was until I needed it, and it came just in with the perfect timing.

Parles-nous de la signification de ton nom ?
Mon nom est un thé sacré d’Amazonie appelé Ayahasca. Je ne savais pas ce que ça voulait dire, jusqu’à ce que je ressente le besoin d’apprendre, et c’est venu au bon moment.

When did you understand the meaning of your name?
Maybe when I first gain interest in it. When you’re a kid, there are so many things you don’t question because it’s just normal. Once I was forced to stop skating because of injuries and winter life in general. I was forced to look into other things outside of skating. Spirituality and shamanism, all kind of esoteric things, including psychedelics and Ayahuasca was right there…. of course I’m named after this so why wouldn’t I study it? And eventually my mom thought it was time for me to return to that. You know, realistically as a kid you just take a little bit of it to be a part of the ceremony but nothing to really feel anything but eventually I went to a really serious ceremony and felt at home. A lot of feelings I’d never remembered came back to me.

Quand as-tu appris la signification de ton nom ?
Peut-être quand j’ai commencé à m’y intéresser. Quand t’es enfant, il y a pleins de chose à propos desquelles tu ne poses pas de question car ça semble juste normal. Dès que je suis forcé d’arrêter de skater, pour une blessure ou la période hivernale en général, j’étais obligé de m’intéresser à autre chose que le skate. La spiritualité, le shamanisme, toute sorte de trucs ésotériques, les psychédéliques inclus et l’Ayahasca est là-dedans… Mon nom vient de là donc pourquoi je n’étudierais pas ce domaine ? Et du coup, ma mère a pensé qu’il était temps que je me replonge là-dedans. Tu vois, en étant enfant, tu n’en prends qu’un tout petit peu pour participer à la cérémonie, rien qui te fasse vraiment ressentir quelque chose. Mais j’ai finalement participé sérieusement à une cérémonie et je me suis senti chez moi. Beaucoup de sensations dont je ne m’étais jamais souvenu sont revenu à moi.

Do you have spiritual connections with skateboarding as well?
Definitely, skateboarding is my union … it’s our form of spirituality, it’s our meditation.

Tu as une connexion spirituelle avec le skate aussi ?
Carrément, en skatant je me sens en phase avec moi-même. C’est notre forme de spiritualité, de méditation.

Agree, you are definitely meditating when you’re deep in your sess
Yes, you are constantly facing your own mind.

How does that work like living in NYC ? NYC is a crazy jungle, how do you meditate in a city like NYC ?
Like I was saying, you constantly face your own ego whatever baggage that carries and New York carries that, that ego, that single mindset that can sometimes make you forget where you come from, forget yourself in that, it goes unspoken, New York is a place where you need to know yourself or you might get lost in it.

Comment ça fonctionne dans une ville comme NYC ?
Comme je le disais, tu es constamment face à toi même, d’où que tu viennes. A New York, il y a cette mentalité qui parfois te fait oublier d’où tu viens. New York est un endroit où tu as besoin de te connaitre toi même ou bien tu peux te perdre.

You are currently in Paris, how do you feel about the place?
Also such a land of opportunity.

Tu es actuellement à Paris, que penses tu de cette ville ?
C’est aussi un pays au innombrables opportunités

What are the main differences you felt ?
The best thing about Paris is the smooth ground, no cracks on the floor, it’s such a stage. I feel those cities are platforms for us to paint with our skateboards.

Quelles différences as tu remarquées ?
Le meilleur aspect de Paris est le sol lisse, sans cracks, c’est une telle scène. J’ai le sentiment que ces villes sont des toiles faites pour nous pour peindre avec nos skate.

What about Los Angeles? You go skating with your homies there, Sk8rats crew?
Yeah I love LA, my dad lives there, it’s a great place to visit, but the car life takes over and I just don’t like it because I don’t have a car and you get dependent on everyone else. That’s why I love New York, even Paris you don’t need to be dependent on anyone, you can just be on your board all day.

Tu passes pas mal de temps à LA ?
Oui, j’adore LA, mon père vit là-bas, c’est vraiment génial d’y aller mais la voiture y est obligatoire et je n’en ai pas donc t’es dépendant des autres. C’est pourquoi j’aime NYC et même Paris, tu n’as pas besoin d’être dépendant des autres, tu peux juste être sur ton skate toute la journée.

How was visiting a smaller city like Bordeaux?
Bordeaux is super cool, it’s more like a lifestyle that I appreciate. I want to be there for a longer period of time to really appreciate, that was too short for me, but what I saw was amazing, like a museum city.

Comment as-tu trouvé Bordeaux ?
Bordeaux, c’est vraiment cool. J’ai plus le life style que j’ai apprécié. C’était trop court, j’aurais besoin d’y rester plus longtemps pour vraiment apprécier, mais ce que j’en ai vu est génial, comme une ville musée.

What’s up with your avocado obsession?
Well, the avocado not only is one of my favorite fruits but also a symbol of health and kind of freedom. As a child I was very timid to make art, and then finally when I kind of got inspired you know to break that boundary, avocado was the first thing that came to me because I was also learning how to eat at the same time because as a child I was very picky with food. So I was finally learning to love food and learning to love making art and avocados came right at the same time and I stuck with it. And eventually I moved on to all fruits and now I just have a passion for all fruits.

Parle-nous de ton obsession pour les avocats ?
Alors, l’avocat n’est pas seulement mon fruit préféré, c’est aussi un symbole de santé et de liberté. En étant enfant, j’étais trop réservé pour faire de l’art, et puis j’ai été assez inspiré pour pouvoir passer outre cette timidité, et l’avocat est ce qui m’est venu à l’esprit en premier car j’étais aussi en train d’apprendre à bien me nourrir à ce moment-là. Enfant, j’étais vraiment difficile avec la nourriture. Donc j’étais en train d’apprendre à aimer l’art et les avocats sont arrivé juste à ce moment et ça m’est resté. Au final je me suis tourné vers d’autres fruits, maintenant je suis passionné par tous les fruits.

What are the upcoming skateboarding projects you’re working on?
I’m really happy to have finished many projects this year. I’m somehow very relieved to have only one left, the Transworld part with Chris (Thiessen), I’m very excited.

Quels sont les projets sur lesquels tu travailles ?
Je suis déjà très heureux d’avoir terminé beaucoup de projets cette année. D’une certaine manière, je suis soulagé qu’il n’est reste qu’un, la part Tranworld avec Chris (Thiessen), je suis super excité.

Can you tell us about the new TWS video ?
It’s been amazing traveling and gaining lifetime homies. Each trip has been great memory: it’s almost like we are documenting each trip rather than trying to document a video. There, we were just going along with it, whatever was happening.

Que peux-tu dire sur la prochaine vidéo Transworld ?
Voyager et passer tu temps avec les potes est incroyable. Chaque trip a son lot de bons souvenirs, j’ai l’impression qu’on est plus en train de documenter chaque voyage plutôt qu’essayer de documenter une vidéo. On a tous joué le jeu, quoi qu’il arrive.

You used to ride for Chocolate before your injury, what happened and how did you switch to Alien ?
Well, Chocolate fell through, ah ah it’s not that they fell through, we were filming for a video and then I was getting offers from Habitat but at the same time I had a knee injury so I took some time away from both and Habitat said “get back to us when you’re healthy” basically and then about the time I was healthy they were starting Alien which had more space and more money than Habitat, just like I could not afford it at the time so it seemed the right thing to do, also having many friends who were part of it. It was very good.

Tu skatais un moment pour Chocolate avant ta blessure, qu’est t il arrive et comment es-tu arrivé chez Alien ?
Alors, Chocolate sont passée à côté, ah ah non en fait on filmait pour une vidéo et je recevais aussi des offres d’Habitat mais au même moment je me suis blessé au genou, je me suis éloigné un moment des deux et Habitat m’avaient dit « reviens vers nous quand tu seras guéri » et quand j’allais mieux ils relançaient Alien qui avait plus de place et plus de budget qu’Habitat, donc ça semblait la bonne chose à faire, et aussi j’ai beaucoup de potes chez Alien. Tout va bien.

It’s good to hear that you’re back 100 %. What are the next few months gonna look like for you ? Do you have an idea or you prefer not to think about it ?
I have a couple of tricks I want to do back at home but I’m just excited for the next trips because that video feels more spontaneous rather than having ideas and planning a video part. It’s more just happening.

A quoi vont ressembler tes quelques mois prochains ?
J’ai encore quelques tricks à filmer en rentrant chez moi mais je suis très excité de partir pour le prochain trip car cette vidéo se fait spontanément, plutôt que très anticipée et planifiée.
