Nick Zizzo interview

We’ve been following Nick for a while. He regularly put out some sick web parts here and there, used to ride for Stacks, left Stereo, stayed in LA and Florida…
At only 23, it seems like he already had a couple of lives and still continue to build new ones.
We asked him about his different experiences and how he look at his future. keep an eye on him in the near future. 

 

Let’s cut out the basics, full name, age, where you from and where do you currently reside?
My real name is Nicky James Zizzo. I’m 23 years old. I was born in Connecticut, lived in North Carolina until I was 12, and then moved to Florida where I lived out my teenage years. I’ve been floating around to different places since I graduated high school but I just moved back to northern Florida, Tallahassee, to get some college done.

Commençons par les bases, nom, âge, d’où viens-tu et où habitues tu actuellement ?
Mon vrai nom est Nick James Zizzo. J’ai 23 ans. Je suis né dans le Connecticut, j’ai vécu en Caroline du Nord jusqu’à 12 ans, puis j’ai déménagé en Floride pendant mon adolescence. J’ai bougé dans pas mal d’endroits jusqu’à obtenir mon bac et je viens de revenir dans le nord de la Floride, Tallahassee, pour finir mes études.

 

Now a lot of people have the misconception of you “hopping around” a lot, can you clear up a bit of that and tell us what happened with Reese Forbes’ company Stacks ?
Stacks came about right when I moved to Los Angeles when i was 19. I met a bunch of people who rode for them, as well as the team manager Justin Maruco and the intern at the time Andrew Compton. I was always a fan of stacks so I gave them footage and it all worked out.  I feel like Stacks was before its time though, before smaller brands were “cool”. If Stacks never went out of business I’d still be riding for them and I think they’d be doing really well in the industry right now. I didn’t realize how awesome they were until Michael and Reese pulled the plug n it.

 

Beaucoup de gens pensent que tu ne tiens pas en place, peux-tu clarifier et dire ce qu’il s’est passé avec Stacks, la marque de Reese Forbes ?
Stacks est arrivé juste quand je me suis installé à LA quand j’avais 19 ansJ’ai rencontré pas mal de gars qui skatais pour la marque, et aussi le team manager Justin Maruco et Andrew Compton qui travaillait pour Stacks J’ai toujours été fan de Stacks donc j’ai envoyé des images et ça a marché. Je pense que Stacks était en avance sur son temps, avant que les petites marques deviennent « cool ». Si Stacks n’avait pas mis la clé sous la porte, j’y serais encore et je pense que ça fonctionnerait très bien dans l’industrie du skate actuelle.  Je n’avais pas réalisé à quel point c’était bien jusqu’à ce que Michael et Reese arrêtent.

 

Stacks would of done pretty well for sure. Also, what happened over at the Stereo camp?
It was a mutual leaving. I love all of those guys, and I still talk to most of them on a daily basis. Stereo is trying to branch out and appeal to larger crowd, which is understandable; it just wasn’t something I was really into because I grew up on their older stuff. Either way I’m honored to have ridden for such a monumental company. Dune is a great guy and I’m stoked for the opportunities he’s given me.

 

Par ailleurs, que s’est-il passé avec Stereo ?
C’était une décision mutuelle. J’apprécie tous les gars, et je leur parle encore tous les jours. Stereo essaye de se diversifier et de toucher un plus grand public, ce qui est totalement compréhensible, c’est juste quelque chose dans lequel je ne me reconnaissais pas car j’ai grandi avec ce qu’ils avaient fait avant. C’était un honneur de rider pour une si prestigieuse marque. Dune est un mec super, je suis ravi des opportunités qu’il m’a données.

 

 

Have you ever talked with J Lee or Pastras about the direction that Stereo took ? Many people get confused about that
I have with dune but it was intimidating speaking with him, he’s a legend, someone I’ve looked up to for many years. I’d put my two cents in when they asked, but it seemed like they would be bummed some of the times when I’d speak my opinions. From a business point of view, what they’re doing makes complete sense. They’re appealing to the masses, not just the standard stereo fan from the 90s. Skateboarding is changing and stereo is changing with it.

 

Avais-tu parlé avec J.Lee ou Chris Pastras de ce qu’ils avaient fait de Stereo ?
Oui avec Chris Pastras. C’était intimidant de parler avec lui, c’est une légende, quelqu’un que je suivais depuis beaucoup de temps. J’aurais donné mon point de vue si ils avaient demandé mais ils auraient été vexé si j’avais donné mon opinion. D’un point de vue strictement business, la démarche de Stereo est cohérente. Ils font appelle  à la masse et pas juste les fans de Stereo des 90’s. Le skate change et Stereo change avec.

 

You mentioned you lived in Los Angeles, what was your living situation like out there in such a hectic place ?
Everything was pretty mellow up until Matt Militano and I split to east LA where we shared a room in this quadruplex. We had both apartments that pretty spacious. We stared recruiting homie after homie and eventually it turned into a skateboarding hostile with close to 20 people living there plus random visitor. It consisted of myself, Matt, Jamal Gibbs, Tony Karr, Nate Greenwood, Josh Baker, Yoshi Tanenbaum, Coley Martin, Gavin Nolan, Nick Rodriquez, Cody Thompson, just to name a few.(Instagram : @sk8_house). There was never a dull moment, and if I had the chance to do it again I totally would.

 

Tu as vécu à Los Angeles, comment vivais tu là-bas ?
Tout était tranquille jusqu’à ce que moi et Matt Militano bougent à l’est de LA où j’étais en colocation dans un quadruplex. Nous avions les deux appartements si spacieux. Nous avons recruté des colocataires and finalement, c’est devenu une maison du skate avec vingt personnes qui habitaient là plus les gens de passage. Ca consistait de moi-même, Matt, toi, Tony Karr, Nate Greenwood, JoshBaker, Yoshi Tanenbaum, Coley Martin, Gavin Nolan et beaucoup d’autres. On ne s’ennuyait jamais, et si c’était à refaire, je recommencerais.

 

So now that you’re in Florida what does a normal day in Tallahassee consist of ?
Well I’m currently working two restaurant jobs, but on my days off I wake up to a pot of coffee, hang it with my roommates and my girlfriend for a bit. Maybe watch some old skate videos, go to the skatepark to warm up, and then hopefully hit the streets. There’s a lot of spots here that are untouched because there’s only a handful of skateboarders in this area, so everything is a go a majority of the time. I also just got my first film camera so I’ve been trying to bring that out with me every time we skate. After we’re done, maybe go to happy hour or have a bonfire with a bunch of friends. It’s nice here, it’s simple living.

 

Maintenant, tu vis en Floride, à quoi ressemble ton quotidien à Tallahassee ?
En ce moment, j’ai deux boulots dans des restaurants, pendant mes journées libres je me réveille avec un bole de café et je traîne un moment avec mes coloc et ma copine. On regarde des vidéos puis on va skater le skatepark pour s’échauffer, on part ensuite à l’assaut de la rue.  Beaucoup de spots sont encore vierges car il n’y a que quelques skaters dans ce coin. Je viens de faire l’acquisition d’une caméra, donc je la prends avec moi à chaque fois qu’on va skater. Après ça, on peut aller profiter d’un happy hour avec les potes. C’est sympa içi, c’est un mode de vie simple.

 

Any plan for 2015?
I’m taking a trip out to California next month to house search and line up a job and then I’m moving back there this summer. I just started getting flowed Santa Cruz boards as well so hopefully I’ll be meeting those guys while I’m in the area.  I’ve never skated New York so that’s definitely on my agenda for the year. As for now I’m just working a full time and skating on the weekends, and taking little trips here and there.

Des plans pour 2015 ?
Je pars en Californie le mois prochain pour trouver un job, un toit et je reviens cet été. Je viens de rentrer en flow chez Santa Cruz donc j’espère que je vais recontrer les gars là-bas. Je n’ai jamais skaté à New York, donc c’est carrément dans mon agenda cette année. Sinon pour l’instant, je travaille à plein temps, je skate le week-end et je bouge par ci par là.

 

What would you like to achieve in the future?
Honestly I couldn’t tell you. I’ve never really had stability in my life, things are always changing and I’m always moving around. But I’m excited to go back out west and really give this skating thing a try. Travel as much as possible and get a passport so I can explore places other than the states. I also would like to get a degree in something I’d enjoy doing, I just need the time and money to really push myself to do that. For now I’m pretty content working at a sushi restaurant and skating with my friends.

Quel but aimerais tu atteindre dans le futur ?
Honnêtement je ne pourrais pas te dire. Je n’ai jamais eu une vie stable, ça bouge tout le temps. Je suis vraiment excité à l’idée de repartir sur la côte Ouest et de tenter ma chance avec le skate. Voyager le plus possible et avoir un passeport pour explorer le globe. J’aimerais aussi obtenir un diplome dans un domaine qui m’intéresse.  J’ai juste besoin de temps et d’argent pour me pousser à faire ça. Pour l’instant, je suis assez content de bosser dans un restaurant de sushi et de skater avec mes potes.
