JIMMY LANNON INTERVIEW

Interview by Leo Valls and Charles Paratte

 

“Floating over a fire hydrant” is the image that comes to mind when the name Jimmy Lannon is mentioned. I met Jimmy for the first time in Bordeaux a few years ago. I quickly realized he has much more to offer than a couple of ollies, great ollies albeit, on and off his board.
Jimmy has been around for a while, keeping under the radar. He is definitely not into self-promotion, except when it comes to film and video parts.
Leo Valls visited Jimmy in Florida a couple of weeks ago and took the opportunity to interview him. They discussed what he has to say about living in Florida, practicing martial arts, discovering new scenes, and more…

Léo : Can you tell us where we are at the moment?
We are in Tampa Florida, about 1 hour north from where I live in Sarassotta, Florida.

Peux-tu nous dire où nous sommes là ?
Nous sommes à Tampa en Floride, environ une heure au nord de là où je vis à Sarassotta.

L:How was growing up here and skateboarding in Florida?
It was good growing up here, you have year round skating, which you know isn’t possible everywhere. It is really hot, so you get used to sweating hard and it gives you stamina to skate in the heat. But yeah, Florida is good, everything is really spread out. You have to get a car and drive everywhere. It is kind of annoying but it’s just how it is here.

Comment c’était de grandir et skater en Floride ?
Grandir içi m’a plu, tu peux skater toute l’année, comme tu le sais ce n’est pas possible partout. Il fait très chaud, tu dois t’habituer à beaucoup transpirer et ça te donne de l’endurance pour skater dans la chaleur. Tout est très éparpillé. Tu dois avoir une voiture et conduire pour aller n’importe où. C’est un peu embêtant mais c’est comme ça içi.

L:So you had to get a car very young and get your driver’s license pretty early?
Yeah it is a good way to see the state and meet skaters from other places. You can drive at age 16 in the states.

Donc tu as dû avoir une voiture et ton permis de conduire très jeune ?
Oui c’est une bonne façon de découvrit la région et rencontrer d’autre skaters. Tu peux conduire à 16 ans içi.

L:Sure, I’ve been staying with you in the past, we’ve been driving to different cities, Miami Tampa and Gainsville. We’ve been in a car, driving for hours pretty much every day. So, you’re used to this, right?
Yeah, Florida is kind of a long state and you have to drive in most of the cities. I think Gainsville is the only one relatively small where you can get around with a bike or a skateboard if you are downtown near a school or a College campus.

Oui, j’avais passé du temps avec toi içi, nous avons roulé dans plusieurs villes, Miami, Tampa et Gainsville. Nous avons passé des heures dans la voiture à peu près tous les jours. Tu as l’habitude de ça toi ?
Oui, la Floride est un état étendu et tu es obligé de conduire dans à peu près toutes les villes. Je pense que Gainsville et la seule relativement petite où tu peux bouger à vélo ou en skate si tu es au centre-ville vers une école ou au campus.

Charles :A lot of your friends from Florida moved to SF, why made you decide to stay in Florida?
I never moved because I am married and my wife was going to UF(university of Florida) in Gainesville FL.  This year we moved back to Sarasota where I was born and raised.  My family is here in Sarasota, so I knew I would never move to far away.

Beaucoup de tes amis skaters de Floride sont partis vivre à SF, pourquoi es-tu resté en Floride ?
Je ne suis jamais parti car je suis marié et ma femme allait à l’Université à Gainsville. Cette année nous sommes retournés à Sarasota où j’ai grandit. Ma famille est içi, donc je sais que je ne partirai jamais loin.

L :When did you start travelling and going out of Florida ?
My first real international trip was with Element, I went to Finland. I was 24.

Quand as-tu commencé à voyager en dehors de la Floride ?
Mon premier véritable voyage international, c’était avec Element, nous sommes partis en Finlande. J’avais 24 ans.

L :Since then, what are your favorite places you went to?
Japan is on the top of the list along with France, two wonderful places. Such different cultures from what I’m used to so really opens your eyes makes you grateful how your home is because it’s what traveling does you know; it gives you a good perspective on the world and where you are.

Et depuis ça, quelles ont été tes meilleures destinations ?
Le Japon est l’un de mes voyage préfèrés, avec le France, deux pays extraordinaires. Des cultures tellement différentes de ce à quoi j’étais habitué qui t’ouvre les yeux et te font apprécier l’endroit où tu vis, car c’est ce que les voyages provoquent, ils te donnent une perspective sur le monde et sur l’endroit où tu vis.

Ch : Traveling the world and meeting a lot of different scenes, how different is the approach of skateboarding?
Each culture or place has its own unique approach to skating, I think due to the terrain or environment. Japan was very interesting, one of the most welcoming and kind skate scenes I have ever experienced.  Plus, some of the most creative approaches to skateboarding.  France too has an amazing skateboard scene.  I really enjoyed the quality of life in Bordeaux.  Somewhat small city so you just push around, so much more fun than driving everywhere.  Which is what we do in Florida primarily because everything is so spread out.  Bordeaux’s has the nicest ground too!!!  As seen in the new video Just Cruise.

D’après ce que tu as vu lors de tes voyages, comment sont les différentes façon de skater selon les endroits où tu es allé ?
Chaque culture ou pays a une approche unique du skate, dû je pense à l’environnement. La Japon était très intéressant, une des scènes les plus accueillantes que j’ai rencontré. Et en plus, ils ont une approche très créative du skate. La France a aussi une scène incroyable. J’ai beaucoup apprécié la qualité de vie à Bordeaux. Une ville de taille modeste où tu peux rouler, c’est tellement mieux que de conduire partout, car c’est ce que nous faisons en Florida car tout est étendu. Et à bordeaux, il y a le meilleur flat. Comme on le voit dans la vidéo Just Cruise.

L :So, what about riding for Magenta, how did that happen?
Through mutual friends, meeting Ryan Garshell, from the GX1000 videos. He visited friends and basically it’s how I came up because I had a bunch of footage he showed you guys, it’s how we got linked up.

Tu ride pur Magenta, comment est-ce arrivé ?
Grace à des amis communs, et particulièrement Ryan Garshell, des vidéos GX1000. Il est venu rencontrer des amis et c’est comme ça que je suis arrivé, j’avais beaucoup d’images et il vous les a montrées, c’est comme ça que nous avons été connectés.

The only reason I wanted to ride for them was because I looked up to Jake Rupp

Ch :You used to ride for Element, how is skating for magenta is different?
Well riding for Element just felt Corny.  It never felt right cause the only reason I wanted to ride for them was because I looked up to Jake Rupp.  As soon as they wanted to start paying me they fired Jake and told me I was his replacement basically.  Not to mention for a small fraction of what they were paying Jake.  Then they lied about everything they ever told me, and stole my idea of a sock brand with images (stance socks) Ryan Kingman was the VP at the time at element.  I asked him to help me start a sock brand for skaters.  Soon after that stance came out.  Not to mention I had to sue Element because they tried to get away with shorting me $12,000 out of the sorry ass contract they gave me.  There was no trust.  Magenta is great it really feels as if we are a Family.  We also have made extended family all over the world.  Magenta as a sponsor has been the best.  I’m very grateful.  Thanks Vivien, Soy, and Leo for having me.

Tu as skaté un moment pour Element, comment est-ce diffèrent de rider pour Magenta ?
Rider pour Element était naze. Je ne m’y suis jamais bien senti car au départ, l’unique raison pour laquelle je voulais rider pour eux était parce que j’adorais Juke Rupp. Dès qu’ils ont voulu me payer, ils ont viré Jake et ils m’ont dit que j’étais plus ou moins son remplaçant. Sans mentionner que c’était pour beaucoup moins que ce qu’ils payaient Jake. Et puis ils ont menti sur à peu près tout ce qu’ils disaient, et ils m’ont volé mon idée de marque de chaussettes (Stance socks). Ryan Kingman était le VP à ce moment-là. Je lui ai demandé de l’aide pour monter la marque de chaussettes pour skaters. Peu après Stance était lancée. Sans mentionner que j’ai dû les poursuivre pour avoir essayé de retirer 12 000 $ sur mon contrat. Il n’y avait aucune confiance. Avec Magenta, on se sent vraiment comme une famille. Magenta est le meilleur sponsor. Nous avons aussi tissé des liens dans le monde entier. J’en suis très heureux. Merci à Vivien, Soy et Léo pour m’avoir pris.

L:Could you tell about your favorite memory since the Magenta adventure started?
Shit… probably protecting Zach Lyons. There was a music festival in Bordeaux, there was glass everywhere in the street, he was like black out drunk and he kept breaking bottles on people’s feet. And all these big dudes kept coming up and rollin’ up on him, trying to beat him up basically. I kept having to intervene and tell people “Nah, leave him alone, he’s just really drunk”  ahah

Racontes nous le meilleur souvenir depuis que tu es chez Magenta ?
Merde… Probablement protéger Zach Lyons. C’était au festival de musique à Bordeaux, il y avait du verre partout dans les rues, il était complétement bourré et n’arrêtait pas de balancer des bouteilles aux pieds des gens. Des grands types venaient et commençaient à s’en prendre à lui, j’ai dû intervenir pour leur dire « Non, laissez-le, il est juste très bourré » ahah

L :So some good times in Bordeaux with Zach and the crew, right?
Yes, some of the best memories in my life. Those were some good times. Awesome quality of life in Bordeaux.

Donc, du bon temps à Bordeaux avec Zach et la bande, c’est ça ?
Oui, parmi les meilleurs moments de ma vie. J’ai de super souvenirs là-bas. La qualité de vie y est incroyable.

L :You’ve been doing martial arts for a while, tell us about it and how it influences your skating?
It’s a similar discipline, like you don’t get any better at it unless you put the time in. They kind of complement each other in the sense that when you do martial art, it builds up your body so you won’t get hurt skating. You’ll be more resilient and more on point. It’s how I feel about it. So I try to do that to balance out my skating, I can practice that and it helps me with skating because it strengthens the body.

Tu pratique les arts martiaux depuis un bon bout de temps, à quel point cela influence ton skate ?
Ce sont deux disciplines similaires, tu ne peux pas progresser si tu n’y consacres pas beaucoup de ton temps. Ils se complémentent dans le sens où les arts martiaux te permettent de développer ton corps pour ne pas te blesser en skate. Tu seras plus résistant et mieux préparé. Je le vois comme ça.

L :So are martial arts the trick for high floating ollies ?
It definitely helps, because core strength is where high ollies will come from, your gut, because your abdomen muscles are what pull your legs to your chest which is what you do when you do a high ollie really. You are lifting in your feet more than using your calves or anything to jump, it’s like your abdomen is pulling your knees to your chest. So it definitely gives you more power and snaps.

Donc les arts martiaux sont le secret pour faire des gros ollies ?
Ça aide forcement, car la hauteur des ollies dépends de la force interne, dans les tripes, car ce sont les muscles du ventre qui tirent tes jambes vers la poitrine, c’est ce qui se passe quand tu fais des gros ollies, vraiment, tu es plus en train de monter tes pieds qu’utiliser tes mollets ou autres pour sauter. C’est comme si ton abdomen venait tirer tes genoux vers ta poitrine. Donc, ça te donne plus de puissance et de vivacité.

L :What gets you exited in skateboarding nowadays? What do you enjoy watching the most?
Hmmmm… Instagram I guess, hahaha 

Ch :The last time I met you, you told me about Ron Finley, would you tell us who he is and why does he inspire you?
Yes Ron Finley is a real gangsta.  Encouraging people to take their health back!  Grow your own food. Fuck GMO’s. He says the problem in America is the food. So the solution is the food as well. I suggest everyone watch his TED talk.

La dernière fois que je t’ai vu, tu m’a parlé d’un certain Ron Finley, qui est-il et pourquoi t’inspire –t-il ?
Oui Ron Finley est le vrai gangster. Il incite les gens à reprendre la main sur leur santé. A produire sa propre nourriture. Fuck les OMG ! Il dit que le problème de l’Amérique est la nourriture. Donc la solution est aussi dans la nourriture. Je vous invite à regarder son TED talk !

Any future plans in the life of Jimmy ?
Keep on living, haha.
